No. His FTP is probably the best in the peloton, but to win the classics, you need to be able to go from FTP to short duration max efforts to FTP, rinse and repeat.

I definitely think he could. Of course it would have to be solo, but that's very doable in PR.

What makes you think he couldn't do that? Or train for that? Some specific training and I think he could manage PR just fine.

Tony Martin is not what I call a cycling champion. He's just an employee for Quick Step that does what his boss asks him to do.

How come that such a powerful heavyweight rider never even STARTED Paris-Roubaix! It's beyond imagination. He must hide himself in shame because he should have won that race as much as Cancellara did.

Paris-Roubaix does not require anaerobic capacity but aerobic capacity. It's a stamina race. He hasn't raced it because he does not have cycling culture. He's an Easterner. You don't make a name for yourself on all these silly little stage races. Paris-Roubaix is the greatest of all cycle races, right? He should know that by now. But now, Mr Martin rather chose to race some little race where he's sure to win something or should I say to EARN something rather than risk it all on the Classic Queen ...

Look at Cancellara. He surprised everybody when he announced by the start of the 2004 season that Paris-Roubaix was among his objectives and he shocked everyone with his 4th place. Now the result is: 3 Paris-Roubaix, 3 Tours of Flanders, 1 Milan-Sanremo, 1 Tour of Switzerland, 1 Tirreno Adriatico, 2 Montepaschi and dozens of high places in classics and stage races. He's a champion. Martin is just a softie, period.

I with Echoes (to some degree) on this one. I have always thought that obviously Martin should ride PR rather than the Tour of the Basque Country or whatever (I've nothing against the Basque tour, but why should Tony always have to ride it?). I guess if he had been riding for any other team, he would have ridden PR years ago. He seems happy at Etixx. It doesn't seem to have hit the ORICA levels of democracy, but it is a very strong team of riders that are generally happy to help each other out (with the exception of PR and obvious sprint stages)

Tony demand to ride PR!! I don't care what Boonen or Terpstra might think.

Gilbert was born in 1982. In 2011 he was too old to wear the white jersey.

From 1989 to 1999 the white jersey wasn't awarded. Technically Virenque and Jalabert never wore the white jersey.

Reading that interview, I get the impression Tony is a bit lacking in confidence and an introvert. Makes him a sympathetic figure, at least to me, but maybe Echoes does have a point.
