i always thought it was stupid to make Pater Damiaan the greatest Belgian, its great what he has done but Paul Janssen is probably the Belgian who did the most for mankind, should have given that tittle to him, stupid contest anyway, Clijsters at rank 14? Come on, thats just stupid!

They put Clijsters at 14? Well that is stupid.

Probably the only time in her life she has finished above Justine though.

Ya and Greg won the thing too Twice!

Yes Lance is a better TDF but against inferior competition
Greg was racing Paris Roubaix and other classics and one day races like Worlds against the likes of Kelly, Moser,Hinault etc
So Lemond is comparable when you consider the competition
Greg beat riders who had over 20 TDF wins between them Lance 2...
I think Greg is better
you say it is not comparable?
Please
Fixed it for you!
Plus in 83 Lemond achieved a feat only 4 others have done before or since. He was WC and Prestige Pernod winner simultaneously . Armstrong managed WC once and 8 years later was leader, in the competition that succeeded it the FICP, for 12 weeks!

My list:

Miguel Induraín
Alberto Contador
Federico Bahamontes
Perico Delgado
Luis Ocaña (maybe at the same perico's level )
Carlos Sastre
Roberto Heras (I doubt with Sastre and Heras)
Joseba beloki
Abraham Olano
Alejandro Valverde

any other suggestion?

I think you have most of the big names, but I'm going to add:
Oscar Freire Gomez

To honorable mentions for hard work and longevity:
José (Chechu) Luis Rubiera Vigil

6. George Mount
7. Bobby Julrich

The "pre-USADA" list
ProTour said:
1. John Tomac (National chamionships in BMX, Road, XC, and DH, World Champ in XC, 2X silver medal in DH)
2. Major Taylor
3. Lance Armstrong (if he wins another tour he could go to #2)
4. Greg Lemond
5. Brian Lopes (Still competing, and winning)
6. Myles Rockwell (World Champ DH, plus the fastest road bike descender ever)
7. Floyd Landis
8. Ned Overend
9. Tyler Hamilton
10. Mike King

The "post-USADA" list

1. John Tomac
2. Greg Lemond
3. Brian Lopes
4. Major Taylor
5. Ned Overend
6. Andrew Hampsten
7. Myles Rockwell
8. Mike King
9. Aarron Gwin
10. Dave Cullinan

All the roadies from the Lance era are suspended from my list, Lemond moves up for being ethical, Lopes moves up because he has continued to win World Cup, Super D, and enduro races, and Ned moves up since he has continued his longevity in mountain bike and cyclocross racing.

Maybe in the future Taylor Phinney, TJ, or some of the other young American roadies will make the list, but as of now US road racing history has become pretty bleak.

I've stumbled on this book at my Dutch-speaking book shop in Brussels:

Many weird things.

First the usual Van Looy, a notch over De Vlaeminck, which is still for me unexplainable.

Leman ahead of Verbeeck: simply can't be.

But the worst thing is Steels ahead of Van Hooydonck. For the fanboy that I was, this is heretical.

Care to post the top-10? Or some rankings of riders that are still riding today (e.g. Tom Boonen and Philippe Gilbert)

Time to change the list a little bit.

Johan is out and Boonen is number 9 now. Stan number 10.

How many times did he race it? To be fair, he didn't only make the podium, he won the thing.

In Lance's first 12 Tour de France races he made the podium 8 times. Has anyone ever done that?

Nobody were so heavily doped that many times like Lance so no...to be fair!

Amongst the top UK cyclists of all time I would include George Mills (Paris- Bordeaux winner) and Brian Robonson (a pioneer of continental riding for Brits in the 50s). If you include women then add Beryl Burton.

Lets stick to riders I have actually seen:

1 Peter Winnen
2 Eddy Bouwmans
3 Johan van de Velde [Gavia]
4 Teun van Vliet
5 Henk Lubberding
6 Gerry Kneteman
7 John Talen
8 Wout Poels
9 Hennie Kuiper
10 Eric Vanderaerden [allmost Dutch and alongside Eddy Planckaert and Olaf Ludwig possibly one of my most favorite riders/sprinters of all time]

Dutch number 10 would probably be Bram de Groot or Laurens ten Dam, pretty sure they didn't O-vector in their carreers.

You see, not a lot of Post riders ;)

Ricky Enø Jørgensen from Greenland.

3 times national champion in Denmark. Has beaten riders like Sagan and Degenkolb in the U23 ranks.

Career ended due to injuries.

High time to come to that circumstantially. Currently I see only 3 riders who can win something.

1. Vasil' Kiriyenka (official nickname in Belarus is a little terminator)
2. Kanstanstin Siutsou, the most talented domestic rider no doubt for me. To my great regret, he is the brightest example of how belarussian quiet down if they get good money in Europe. A general Siutsou's level is just insane. I keep my hope alive.
3 Jenek Hutarovich. It is a difficult case. According to Huta's coach, he is the laziest pupil for years so only fortuity can help him.
