Echoes, that seems like a reasonable list. What poiint system are you using?

Hello Gcraenen, it's a ranking I've made a few years ago and I remember I didn't want to go further than 1989 (doping schandals + UCI reforms & too much work to do).

Looking back at my system I used, I find things that are quite weird, myself and that I can't really explain, so I'm open to criticism, really. ;)

Boy, a second grader could have done the math better then I did. :(
Guess that means you drop to 3rd on the list. Dont worry, you're still the highest ranked barber in history.:D

Wasn't there a time that the Giro was just as important as the Tour by the way? I remember reading that somewhere.
I read/heard it somewhere also. Not even in equal terms. Maybe the Giro at some point in the past was more important, but I have nothing to support this. Maybe I have watched some cycling documentaries where I heard that.:)

The problem with great list and point systems is that not all finishes are equal. Example, Beloki finishes 3rd in 2001 Tour and 2nd in 2002 Tour. But he in all reality had very little factor on the race since Lance handily won those 2 races. In 2003, Ullrich and Vino finished 2nd and 3rd and had more factor on the outcome of that race then Beloki did in those 2 years combine. Maybe one day someone can factor a pts system based on relative time to the winner as in general the close you are in time to the winner the more of a factor you have been on the race. Its not a perfect solution, buts maybe helps a little bit more in accuracy. I think we all can agree that the '10 Schleck was more of a factor on the Tour results then the '09 Schleck, eventhough they finish in the same spot. The 10 Schleck was much closer to winning based on time then the 09 . The same for the 3rd place Menchov over Armstrong last year, and Menchov's time was 4 minutes closer.

First, lets establish some criteria. 1 point for a win in a monument or world road race championship, 1 point for a TdF jersey, and 2 points for a grand tour victory? Or should we leave out the point for a jersey, just 2 points for the final victory? What about the cyclo cross world championship?

P.S.: The monuments are MSR, RvV, PR, LBL, PT, and Tour of Lombardia.First, lets establish some criteria. 1 point for a win in a monument or world road race championship, 1 point for a TdF jersey, and 2 points for a grand tour victory? Very interesting topic! It's a very subjective exercice and there is no exact or true list of the the best riders ( even if we can consider Mercxx as a unanimous number 1).

IMO the criteria don t respect the history of cycling. until 20 years ago, winning the Vuelta was not much better than winning the Dauphiné. The 3 Gt are NOT equal.;)

I would give: 6 pts for winning the Tour, 4 points for winning the giro, 3 for the vuelta, 2 for a Tour podium, 1 for a giro/vuelta podium. 3pts for the world, 2 for the monuments.

My list is:
1. Mercxx
2. Coppi ( 2 giri with 13 years interval)
3.hinault
4.Lance
5.Bartali

For Italians the Giro always is/was more important. After WW2 Coppi and Bartali were both GT competitors, if they both put the Giro ahead of the Tour it would automatically have made the Giro a more important race.
But in terms of popularity in Europe I think the Tour has always been ahead.
