Now that is a comparable list:

It has three favorites and one top ten candidate.

However, the point stand that this is not "normal". You had to go back 14 years for a comparable slaughter.

Yet you went back 11 years to find a race with less than 5 riders who abandoned. I had recently re-read my copy of the September 97 issue of Cycle Sport and had the article about all the crashes fresh in my mine.

Perhaps more telling is a quote from Patrick Jonker about that tour:

"...but I think it was bound to happen that guys would get hurt with so many crashes. I've seen more in one week than I have in the whole of my career."

So this massive amount of crashes was also happening 14 years ago, and I'm sure if I go through the other Tour review magazines that I have, we'll probably find similar stories, suggesting that it isn't simply a recent phenomenon.

In the end though, I'll agree there's years where the crashes appear to be few and far between, yet there's evidence showing that there have been years where there have been myriad crashes - so it's certainly more than just a recent phenomenon.

Yep, because his collarbones have some plates in them already because he broke those earlier in his career.

Interesting. So is it possible he broke his shoulder blade, because his collarbone was 'fortified', which might have transfered the impact of the crash to another bone?

Does anyone know what the rehabilitation period for such any injury is?

Vandenbroeck didn't break his collarbone, but his shoulder  which is much worse

That's the price those guys pay for being so light.
There's just nothing which protects the bones.
If we had a reasonable BMI we would see lesser injures

You clearly didn't see my irony, I blame that on my poor english. I remember that, yes, but generally Andy isn't that much of a team player IMO.

Guess I missed the irony there, then again the internet sucks for irony and sarcasm. Not sure whether Andy is a team player or not. But it does seem he has motivational problems and it seems when he's not interested in a race he's not on form leading him to be a rather useless team mate.

That looks pretty blatant.

Yeah, throw that all Russian team out. Joke all season, so only normal that they're a joke now.

Geraint Thomas is right, the peloton is filled with muppets. How about you throw those muppets out, so we can have a little bit less crashes.

I had Basso coming in 2nd and Cunego something like 8th, and still don't see any reason to change that. As far as S. Sanchez goes, I had him in top ten originally, and was just now trying to give Ryo a little hope and got caught out in it by the ever sharp The Hitch. A good result for Sanchez still isn't outside the realm of possibility but I confess he does face a challenge.

lol, thanks but im not very sharp when it comes to Sanchez, just very upset at what happened last week and trying to vent my outrage at every turn.

What do you guys think about Cunego's chances now with all these Top 10 candidates fading/abandoning? He's only 1.12 behind and could be going for a solid top 10.

At best. Still a long way off a top 5, not to mention the podium.
