As good as Froome looks, I can't forget how he looked just as dominant in 2013 on AX3 and Ventoux, but by the end of the Tour Quintana was clearly the stronger, particularly on Alpe D'Huez where he took more than a minute off him.

At 2013 Alpe d'Huez the Sky Team car suffered a mechanical on the way up the first climb, so Froome was unable to get energy gels until halfway up the final climb with Purito, Quintana and Porte when the car got back into position and Froome and Porte dropped back to get the energy gels and sucked up a 20 second penalty.

Yes, I remember well that piece of overt cheating by Froome.

I tweeted him afterwards asking why, if he has no moral qualms about breaking rules in full view of everyone, why we should believe he wouldn't break rules when no one is watching.

Funnily enough I've been blocked ever since. :)

I assume you do that to every footballer whoever commits a foul too, your thumbs must be hanging by a thread with all this crusading tweeting you do

I don't watch football but I think a foul, which may be completely unintentional, committed on the spur of the moment, is different from a premeditated, intentional act known to be against the rules but done pragmatically and cynically because the reward outweighs the risk.

But that's just my view.

Van Garderen is intent on defending his podium position so if Contador and co attack, he will chase them down, which will help Froome.

That is true, it would be a surprise to see either Sanchez or Caruso in a position to chase in the mountains without Van Garderen being a long way behind and losing a big chunk of time.

I'm ok with this. The road is tight, and of course there's a big fall on the side on many places, but visibility and the road surface look excellent.

Unless it rains...

Purito better do something. At least to secure the mountain jersey. And the guy is awesome in the rain. Perhaps even better than Nibali.

I also except Pinot, Bardet, Majka and Fuglsang to be in the break. Let's have the strongest break possible. :D

Maybe the mods can have a sticky thread with everything Netserk wants in a stage thread so we keep him happy?

Don't really see were you are coming from actually.

Evidently, there are posters here that likes to post great OP:s, Eshnar during the Giro for example and who can forget the 2011 Tour and all those epic OP's? Tuarts, Hitch and jobiwan lightning up the forum with OP's epic enough only to be rivaled by Andy's long ranged attack.

Just have a look! :D

viewtopic.php?t=14575

And I am not saying everyone has to put in this amount of work, just pointing out that, when we have people willing to put in the effort, why not let them do it?

Yeah those were the glory days of the forum. High quality and a lot less trolling. The days are long gone though ;)
Where is tuarts btw?

I've pretty much stopped watching football because of this. 22 players who are constantly trying to fool the referee and then at the end of the match they flame the referee for his mistakes. Yeh duh.....
All this theatre is easy to counter.

Oh wait this is a stage thread. If anything I'm quite frustated with football :)

Which is the best dowhill rider: Majka, Pinot, Bardet, Fuglsang or Purito? Majka is the worst, I think.

Pinot isn't great, Bardet is good as shown in the Dauphine stage. Fuglsang is a former MTB (?) but I haven't really noticed him do anything on a descent, Purito is pretty good too.

I'd say Bardet is the best of that lot

With 4 mountain stages still to come, the fight for the yellow jersey is still on. The contenders will be hoping to exploit Froome's perceived weakness on the descent. A strong break to go, with Martin, JRod and Majka being likely candidates. Those on the edge of the GC battle (Nibali/Bardet) will be looking to do a Bardet style jump at the top of the penultimate climb. Froome will try to control on this stage. A break might succeed, but it's going to be a lot harder than in the past few days, as especially Movistar know that they need to start pulling back time to have any chance of winning
1. JRod, 2. Martin (it can't be Sagan surely, so who else? ;) ), 3. Bardet.

Talk of Dan Martin being unwell or certainly not feeling 100% so don't see him challenging even though the final climb is tailor made for him. Normally I would go for Bardet but he's bordering on GC contention so he may not be allowed to go. Rolland perhaps?

Re: Tour de France 2015 Stage 17: Digne-les-Bains-Pra Loup 1

People have been talking about riders such as Purito, Fuglsang for the jersey but one rider that is not getting a mention is Pauwels. Riding well. On 38 points. Picking up points.

If riders don't go for it, he's a good shot. He won't challenge in final climbs, but he can pick up points before hand.

Yeah. It's 100% that Pauwels will go for the jersey, I'm not sure about Birdsong and the Little Cigar. They don't seem to care as much about it.

he was on antibiotics, no idea if he still is though, his condition was improving over the past days.

I don't think that the final climb is particularly good for him at all though, no matter if he is fit or not, he always seems to suffer a lot on high speed climbs. He could win a sprint in the end of course, but usually he would waste way too much energy just by trying to stay in the group before that.

I took a look at the Dauphine stage.

The descent is 16 km. Bardet descended in 16m 10s, leading to an average speed of 59.4kph. The peloton lost 1m 15s, with an average speed of 55.1kph.

Interesting to see how fast they do it today.

any chance Astana will chase the break today? They tried to do it monday (with Grivko in the break) and this stage should suit Nibali even better.

Yes

Nibali will win the stage.
