It looks like Sky will slowly let the break grow out and let them take the stage.

Jut when you want SKY to do one thing they do the opposite...sigh

I was hoping they kept the break in check and others would bridge later and open the race up

As is is it will be along solo now by de Gendt ....great nose for a breakaway that man ..not that I mind deGendt getting the win its just had hoped for more open racing and teams need riders up the road for this

Whether they are boring tactics or not, so far Sky are playing this perfectly so far.
They are keeping the break in check, whilst maintaining a high enough pace to prevent stronger riders from bridging, whilst maintaining a low enough pace to ensure they do not catch the break (and thus not allow stronger climbers to form another break).

I don't think that's the case. Sky could easily ride in a slower pace and let the breakaway get 10+ min of a gap but they don't. 5-6 minutes is not that big of a gap for these riders up front. You don't have strong climbers. Ulissi, Gautier, Cummings, De Gendt are nice riders, but I don't trust their climbing ability right now. We'll see. But I wouldn't be surprised if a secondary group attacks already at Col de Mente. Or that's what I hope for at least.

apart Sky there are 10 teams with no one in the break .... the pacing in the peloton however seems to be done exclusively by Sky .... that's fine and understandable, but once again I wonder why same thing doesn't happen in the Scheldeprijs-type stages, i.e. leaving pacing exclusively to Quick Step, the team with the by far strongest sprinter?

Port de Balès will be crucial for the breakaway. If enough of them gets over the top with this advantage, they'll decide the stage between themselves.
I'm not worried about Menté, the peloton won't be storming it.

Re:

I wonder why BMC put Stefan Küng in the break .... he's quite a big guy and not necessarily prone to hold a higher than average pace in the climbs ....

An interesting idea for the stage design would be to offer alternative routes to the riders. For example, give them an option to either turn right in Lacus, over the Allos to Col de la Clin, or to follow the current route.
Would be interesting to follow groups and see who prefers what.
Off course, some computing would be needed.

That is what (bike) orienteering is about, albeit on mountain bikes. Great sport.

The idea, however, stinks of gamification and would ruin road racing at least for me.
