If he has anything left, I think Martin might make this stage interesting.

Froome, Uran & Bardet are not going to risk much. Some minor argy-bargy in the last few km.

Landa is constrained by his team role.

Martin knows he deserves better than sixth and I reckon he won't care about risking a position or two to try & prove it.

He doesn't deserve, and he won't achieve it.

He clearly deserves it.... he's killed himself trying to make up the time he lost due to Riche Porte's crash. Also the rest of the GC guys are so dull to watch in comparison.

All 5 riders above him in GC are stronger, so in my book he doesn't deserve it.

The old 'effort' vs 'abilities' debate

Would have been great if someone closer to the lead would have sneaked in there. Feillu is the best I think.
A bit surprised that Barguil isn't there.

Barguil is in such a fantastic shape that I think he will try to climb Izoard with the favorites, maybe looking to improve his GC position (all his other objectives have been fulfilled already).
If he'd gone with the break, he'd already have a couple of minutes of bonus...
(in such a big break, it's like being in the peloton)

The break will get caught quickly when Sky hits the gas pedal.

If Barguil made the calculation that his chances for a good stage placement is better with the GC group I still think he made a good call.

With size of break it makes know difference, however I suspect he would just have followed Roglic who is not in break

Sky is not divine, you know.
They're strong, but they cannot just reel in a 50-man break if 10-15 men are pulling there. Sky wasn't able to pull back the Movistar break with Quintana in last years Vuelta, costing Froome the overall.

That's also why it's actually good stage design *not* to include a HC climb early on in this stage, because otherwise a lot of power-riders would be shed early from the big break.

I disagree he has not been distanced on any of the climbing stages with the exception of steep finish the day after his crash, he was in the GC group over the top yesterday before getting dropped on the descent.

A lot will depend on how much cooperation in the break
