Id rather not win a stage than be handed a victory because of DSQ.

If De Gendt is getting into breakaways mostly to win the most aggressive rider award I agree that is quite lolworthy, especially if doing so is hampering his ability to actually be competitive once the breakaway is fighting for the stage win.

He hates riding in the peloton, so he either pulls for Greipel or goes into breakaways.

Statistically it should be 1/20 ish. I would imagine its slightly more as the final winners team probably bury themselves more than most other riders.

I actually think it's slightly less, as usually the dominant GT teams usually bring rouleurs who can ride a bit on rolling and hilly terrain.

Unless I've made a mistake, the last time was 1967, when Roger Pingeon won and Jean-Pierre Genet came last, both competing for France A.

According to a user of the Vélo-club du net forum, it last happened in the 1967 Tour (Pingeon & Genet). Also in the 2002 Giro (Savoldelli & Serri) and the 2008 Vuelta (1 Contador 2 Leipheimer / 130 Bazayev 131 Muravyev).

I don't think he ever said he's in breakaways just for the combativity award. His two primary goals were the polkadot jersey and a stage win from the breakaway (like last year). The combativity is just bonus. But of course, when you've been in so many breakaways and you broke the record of breakaway km, I think it's normal you hope you get the super-combativity. Who wouldn't hope for that?

My guess is because you can get closer to the riders out on the "main part" of the route.

I wouldn't like sitting in a stadium, several tens of meters away from the riders. Better to stand on the side of the road IMO.
Maybe people will start to come towards the end, there are still 2 hours left before the GC men arrive.
