They already are on the podium even if Bardet stays away, and they have little chance of a stage win.
They have almost nothing to gain and are throwing away a better chance at the GC.
Why would Astana have little chance of the stage win? They've got the numbers in the group. Didn't they win from a very similar scenario in the Dauphine?

Fuglsang didn't take pulls back then so he was able to squeak a sprint there.
If he can do it here after all this pulling, he's having the day of his career.
