Movistar did send Bennati and Amador to help Quintana. Valverde and Landa were the only two Movistar riders to finish in the lead group. They were NOT going to send either of them back to help and allow the two of them to save time. They are after all also leaders for this race. As for BMC I think they left GVA and Tejay in the front group because they really want the yellow after the TTT and expect to win the TTT. So leave them there also if Porte has more bad luck they'll want to keep Tejay in position to at least try to get the best overall GC he can get. With Movistar as long as Valverde doesn't loose time in the first week, they can expect a top 10 GC finish for him.

Winning yellow for a day or two ( which is no certainty ) is more important than supporting your leader - No wonder BMC is folding.

I thought they were folding because the team owner died. All the riders will be looking out for themselves and finding a new team I guess!

This is what I thought as well. Although rumor is Tejay is headed to Slipstream.

I hate when things like these do so much in determining the overall.
Unfortunately, yes.

Normally I'd agree, but it could do everyone a favour in this race. Once Thomas falls off tomorrow or the next day, Sky will have to change tactics, and we'll be relieved of the burden of watching their train dominate things from stage 10 onwards.

Yates could make a lot of the time back in the TTT. Quintana's probably already lost the leadership at Movistar?

TJ has one more top 5 GC finish in the Tour than Porte. Send him back and, best case scenario, Richie finishes 10s-15s closer to the peloton, and Tejay loses 40 seconds.

Should Sky have sent Thomas back?

Thomas and Porte are good now, Tejay was good three years ago.

On his last time out riding the Tour for GC, TJ was in the top 3 going into the final week. Even with Porte still as their leader, it makes complete tactical sense for Sky to keep TJ as high up the GC rankings for as long as practical/possible.

Put another way, if TJ was strong enough to be the difference in closing up the 52 seconds Richie lost today, he should be the team’s GC leader.
