I'm surprised anyone thought Sagan was a contender for this stage. Can't imagine him having any response for an attack such as Martin's on those gradients
Sagan is a contender for any stage except the biggest mountains. 8th on the day alongside some expert puncheurs (and ahead of some, too) suggests it doesn’t take a whole lot more to go right. I think he was 6th here in 2015? He certainly wasn’t a clear favorite for today, but he couldn’t be counted out.

I watched last km again and i am amazed by Mollema. He was too far behind so someone could thought he would lose seconds but actually he came 7th without problems.

Mollema has the tools to challenge for wins in races like this. That he always comes seventh instead is pretty frustrating.
I was really happy for him when he won San Sebastián the other year, after doing a great ride at the Tour. He’s one of those bubbling-under type riders, who can be up there on all terrains, but doesn’t have the x-factor to then win consistently.

He’s the kind of rider who’ll turn around at age 33 and win Lombardy and the Worlds and Fleche Wallone in the space of 6 months, sign a big contract, and never quite hit those heights again.

I like Dumoulin more than Fuglsang, but I don't see why Fuglsang equally deserves a pentalty compared to Dumoulin. Dumoulin was drafting behind his own team car for quite a bit, I don't think Fuglsang did. Besides, he was with his teammates, who got more of a draft than he did himself.
Edit: I just saw that Astana did draft behind their own team car.

So the 2017 Tour podium all lost time here. Just before y'all get too excited about minuscule gaps on puncheur climbs.

Penalties for car drafting is a "I know it when I see it" kinda thing, and in my mind Fuglsang didn't matter but Dumoulin needs a penalty, bad.

GC who gained/lost time to main pack

Martin: -10
Valverde: -4
Thomas -2
TJ: +3
Froome: +6
Uran: +8
Jungles: +9
Zakarin: +9
Kruijswijk: +9
Bernal: +9
Bardet: +28
Dumoulin: +1:10
It's actually -13 for Martin, +0 for Van Garderena and +5 for Froome
Weird. I know I had already changed Froome and Martin's times. TJ did lose 3 seconds.

Impressive rides: Martin, Latour, Majka, Sagan.

What's impressive with Sagan's ride, he was 4th 3 years ago...

He was lighter 3 years ago. What’s impressive about it is that he finished alone as a big lump in a front few made up of flyweights. The disadvantage he’s at on those gradients is enormous.

Good ride, but not impressive. Impressive would be beating Valverde, or Alaphilippe.

And I don't think he was significantly lighter back then, 2 kilos at most...

Oh you're right. TJ isn't on my GC rider list, so that's what messed me up.

He says he’s 79 kg and that he was lighter back then. I see no reason to doubt him.

As for beating Valverde and Alaphilippe, actually winning on such gradients against the top specialists on a true Mur would be more than than impressive. It would be miraculous. He is a full 20 kg heavier than Dan Martin. The laws of physics sometimes seem not to apply to Sagan, but in fact they do.

Are you really suggesting Dan Martin weighs 59kg??!!

Hey, what do you think about teams not waiting slightly more for TD? Sky, bora & quickstep seemed to up the pace after his puncture from what I saw.

That’s what he’s listed at on PCS (and Wikipedia). He used to be 62 kg a few years ago. Even if he’s still 62, that’s 17 kg lighter.

Team website says 176cm 62kg. Then again judging by several other riders on the site, either it's pre-season weights or they're just wrong.

He's one of those guys who looks way taller than he is because of his position on the bike. Like Pellizotti

ok I'm out. Going to burn some french flags.. ridicolous time penalty ****

Just saw incident. From what was shown on TV, it seemed a normal, garden-variety pacing after an incident. Maybe a bit longer than normal but have seen worse when people chase back on after incident.

Definite lack of consistency.

Imagine if Landa or Quintana would have tried to help Valverde. Not blaming them, its very possible they didnt have anything left, but Richie buried himself for GVA (or was it TJ?).

Fair time penalty btw

Porte was interviewed on ITV. He said that he found himself on the front on the Mur and his only option was to keep going as there was no way on that gradient he could pull over and kick start again. Too honest for his own good!

anyone else get the feeling Thomas is the Sky no.1 for this race? Froome finishing behind TJVG on any kind of hilltop finish is not a great sign imo

I don’t think losing 8 seconds to a Martin who goes berserk on a Mur tells us anything about Froome. If it had been a 4 km climb and he’d been dropped that would be another thing but today was an anaerobic charge.
