Now that Asgreen is across this just became a harder day in the saddle for Bora. Very substantial horsepower in that group even though there’s little climbing ability.

Sagan can’t avoid this year’s Giro. He got paid serious money to ride it;)
I know. But he is not obliged to win the jersey there I think.
I have started to think of Martin as like a Hitler of the peloton. But I'm wondering if I'm being a little harsh on Hitler, as he did sort of build the Autobahn.

By the way, your signature
Have not you heard that Hitler's autobahn is a myth? :)

Bora really trust Sagan here. But they need to try when QS didnt allow him to break. Sagan need his best game to deliver here. He is improving but will be though.

With only 2 minutes to the break, when we get into the hills in 5-10 k, I think we will see a flurry of attacks again.

presumably everyone who thinks they can win but doesn’t think they can climb with Roglic will be nailed to Sagan’s wheel. It will be interesting to see how DQS play it as their big lumps drop away

Is the consensus that the Sagan/GVA types need to be already clear before the last climb or they get smashed by the GC guys trying for bonus seconds?

If not allowed in the breakaway, heavy-hitters shall sort the stage out later on.
Somewhere around the last categorized climbs.
That seems to be the case.

A few scenarios:
  • hard, but not super-hard and Bora stays in control: Sagan gets to the finish with a big group, but the major sprinters are dropped - several other pairs of fast legs still there though (Van Aert, Boasson Hagen, Impey, etc.)
  • hard, then the likes of Alaphilippe, Bettiol, Higuita attack on the steeper parts of the 2nd cat: Sagan loses touch and can only hope his team still has some guys to chase afterwards; small group up the road will fight it out for the stage victory, sizeable bunch with Sagan and all the GC guys rolls in 2 minutes later
  • very hard, no team in control anymore, surprise attacks by GC guys and/or some GC guys unexpectedly struggling: probability of this happening quite low though
  • the current escapees (or some, at least) make it to the end; likelihood close to zero
I think scenario two is the most likely.

I think if the gap is still managable before they hit the main climbs of the day some other teams that can win the stage will try to drive down the gap

It's still about 3 hours til they get there, but I'll make the call that the break will take the bonis
