They tried after 2010 happened.
I still feel bad for Charteau because of that. The categorisation of that era wasn't that bad actually, it worked well with people like Rasmussen, Soler and even Pellizotti as winners, but the routes of that era, with too many neutered mountain stages where they gave double points for the final climb of the day, but it was over 50km from the finish, meant no GC guys even considered it, and then the fight between Abarcá and Radioshack for the Teams Classification meant Moreau, the nearest challenger, wasn't allowed up the road in stage 17. If Christophe Moreau, an ageing former Tour GC man from France, takes the 2010 GPM as a career parting gift no different from Garzelli's GPM victories in the Giro, the system probably doesn't get revamped at all.

The Giro system was pretty strong too, with its "arrival" category and the double for the Cima Coppi, as well as very stingy points for only the top 3-4 riders on any given climb, and for the most part until the revamp that had very strong KOMs too, as it was often targeted by strong ProConti teams (Garzelli, Sella, Pérez Cuapio) or specialists (Piepoli) but even then you had situations where nobody really targeted it, or the people targeting it crashed out leaving low score winners (Wegmann in 2004 and Lloyd in 2010 both won with just 56 points, as opposed to Sella in 2008 with 136 or Rujano in 2005 with 143).

Are they riding this hard to maybe get Ewan to miss the time limit?

He is 14 minutes behind apparently right now

At the current speed the time cut will be something like 35 minutes.

The stage has a coefficient of 2 in the rule book for 'Stages with rolling terrain' - 50 points for the winner but more generous time limits than pan flat stages.

Should be an interesting finale. Hopefully there will be some strong guys going for it on the last bump(s) instead of most teams banking on a bunch sprint.
