what was he going to do for Porte? Pull him if he gets dropped? Perch his tiny little captain on top of his giant bike like a circus act?

Maybe he has been fetching bottles and so on for as long as he could. So Porte or Kenny doesnt have to go down themselves everytime. Plus that service car could have been very far behind while riders have dropped off on the climb, until cars could pass again.

Maybe he just felt good today and hanged on to be of help if necessary, while someone else could "take the day off" and be of service tomorrow for example.
