Would be awesome to have another mountain stage after the final TT. 4 big climbs, almost no flats. Then to Paris.
For many years, the last stage used the vallée de Chevreuse which has some decent Cat. 4 climbs, as well as the approach via the plateau de Saclay, very windy with the possibility for echelons. But the loops on the Champs and the pageantry have turned the last stage into a celebration. An aggressive design could put ten punchy climbs (like 1km @ 10% - 1.5km @ 7-8%), the plateau, then the climb to Meudon's observatory (2km @ 6.8%) with less than 15km to go.

No such finish today. No way to make up a minute. Sagan will try to save his Tour, but it looks like Bennett vs. Ewan ftw.

One thing I don't understand about this stage - every year, not just this year - is why they even have a depart réel. Let's face it; the real depart réel is when they hit Paris.
It's for the breakaway enthusiasts.

Speaking of which, it won't surprise me if Van Aert pulls Vino... out of rage.

Contador appears to have morphed into my boy Juan Antonio

That straight from the packet shirt makes him a dead ringer

That's my wishful thinking for him to win in Paris but it is almost impossible given his form against Ewan, WVA and Bennett this year... They look like they are "toying" with him :(
the Champs-Élysées sprint is special though, I wouldn't be too surprised if we end up with a different winner than in the past ones. But yeah... probably still not Sagan.

“I’m angry and disgusted that no-one has shown solidarity with Kevin Reza”

Rob Hatch doesn't sound best pleased

They have Polanc from UAE team, a fellow Slovenian, riding next to Roglic, to either keep him calm or entertain him so he can get over today's stage without breaking down...

All I know is that lot of times in Paris the win is taken by someone who is least predicted before the stage to take it.

Carapaz wore a face mask at the start with "No al racismo" written on it, dunno if that's related to Reza though.

When did the ceremonial stuff and the general messing around become an unbreakable tradition?

I don't know, but I read about the 1947 Tour recently, and apparently the tradition was already firmly established then even without the Champs Elysees loop.
