In the Pescheux era, this would have been considered a monumental mountain stage

At least Gouveneou adds a cat 4 near the end, with the final few hundred meters uphill to spice things up, and it is only considered a medium mountain stage

I climbed the col de portet-d’aspet today. The weather is awful at the col (in the valley it’s drier and a bit warmer). All I can say is some gc candidates can try something if they have someone on the road. The descent is treacherous with the rain and oil (coming from the mobilhomes I think).
Awesome—great to have intel from our on-site reporter! :)

Looks like the finish is 3 or 400 metres at 7.8 as well. Will make a difference for riders with dead legs sprinting for the stage win.

Frenetic break action and the break will eventually shatter into smaller groups, KOM action, more Cavendish TTT, GC will be Carapaz trying followed by Pogacar and probably another stalemate. Riders 5-10 on GC will continue to yo yo.

What was ASO thinking with this downhill start? Don't they see every year how they race from the start to make the breakaways?

Today there seems to be some chance for echelons in the last 20k. This tour is horrendously designed with more than a handful of completely useless stages and this belongs to that category. Thanks to them it's also completely unlucky. If you dropped that completely useless Nimes stage (it wasn't even transitional) you would have a serious chance of echelons to the Carcassonne (that day it was a strong NW if my memory's correct). If today they switched around Saint-Gaudens with Muret (start in Saint-Gaudens tomorrow) you would have a +20km/h westerly winds while the pack would be moving mainly northwards...

Everybody from 11 or 12 in GC up to 34 but Castro in the break with the main pack rolling in 10-15min behind with maybe some tension in the last 20k but nothing will happen. Paret-Peintre to jump into top 10 (2nd?) but then drop out of it next day. There may be more tactical plays in the break as it seems the climbs will mostly have a rather strong headwind.
