It is only in hindsight you could say that and knowing what would eventually happen on Granon.

When he was covering those attacks and going over Galibier he looked to be in control. Later Majka was leading the group on the early parts of Granon, it was no panic then. That obviously changed within a few minutes.

It it lazy to say it was because of his ego. Something someone would say that just dislikes him. It was more complicated and a learning experience.

Today confirmed again that Maijka rides at a pace too slow to discomfort Vingegaard and Jumbo. The minute Maijka had bike issues, Kuss went to the front and upped the tempo considerably.

Actually they could've distances Thomas if van Aert was at the top and pulled hard directly. Also Vingegaard could've tried to drop Poga and let van Aert pull hard for him. It woud've been epic with 3 duo's most likely.
van Aert/Vingegaard vs Poga/McNulty vs Thomas/Martinez :)
Probably unnecessarily risky. Dream scenario for Vingegaard to be able to cruise down to finish behind WvA at a reasonable speed.

I had a feeling that both Pog and Jonas were on their limit when Kuss launched his pace. :)

He did two huge attacks himself (on the false flat when Roglic and Vino were attacking him) which were nothing but stupid (just showing ego, eg. look at me I am stronger than both of you). In the end maybe exactly those two attacks were too much and cost him to blow out later on Granon.
