Even outside of that he shouldn't be wasting so much resources when he's riding for a top GC team like he is. Brailsford would probably slap him for that.
He should this, he should that ... His goal is to get the green jersey and today, riding in his own country, he wanted to show the yellow jersey one more time. Fine! If you have a track record like Van Aert you should have that freedom.

You really shouldn't at the Tour. Ineos/Sky at their best wouldn't tolerate it and it's all about GC. If we still had 9 man teams, sure you can have another goal but GC is the end goal here for a team like Jumbo.

Also let's face it, he lost the stage today. If he sat in the peleton he has a much bigger chance to win.
