the worst thing is that even though he has burned so many matches already that the local firedepartment is calling in reinforcements, I cannot rule out that he'll still win the stage.

I think the same too but Vingegaard don't have Kuss anymore and there is a possibility of Pogacar dropping Vingegaard. I don't believe it but it can happen.

Yes, that was probably his hopes. Problem is that no one want to jump up to Wout so either UAE chase them or ultimately you get beaten in the sprint by Wout.
