Tour de France Tour de France 2023, stage 20: Belfort - Le Markstein, 133.5k

There's something wrong with his result today. He only lost 52 seconds, yet on GC he fell 1:12 back (I noticed it because he is now 54 seconds behind Simon Yates but had only lost 52 seconds to him, yet they somehow had swapped places).

Ah, now I see he got a 20 second penalty.

There’s also the element of not running up the score or “piling on” whatever you want to call it. Even if it’s not intentional the perception that you’re rubbing your opponents face in the dirt can create bad blood with rivals. He still gave himself a chance to win the stage at the end, but he wasn’t going to just ride away with 5 Km to go whatever. There’s no gain for him or Jumbo to finish 10 minutes ahead as opposed to 7 minutes, and while Jumbo would have liked a stage win he still gave himself a shot.
I've been thinking very much the same thing. Especially with some openly questioning the legitimacy of Jonas and JV, going nuclear again today would not just have been a bad look but potentially pretty unpopular. He was there at the end, took his shot, c'est la vie. Walks away with a crushing TT and GC win. Life's not so bad.

So it was his front wheel that broke? It looked quite mysterious. Poor Kuss, but it certainly highlights that it made great sense for Van Baarle to leave a gap and then have Vingegaard follow him on the descent, as no mistake by a rider in front could take out Vingegaard.

You just have the feeling that Vingegaard didn’t ride to his full potential:
If he can pull off a tt like some days ago, you would expect him to actually race the race, but the next thing you see is him just following wheels and he would even do a track stand if Pog did one, to make absolutely sure he isn’t doing anything than following wheels.

i would have loved to see an aggressive Vingegaard today: it’s the TdF and he raced this last stage as if he was afraid to influence the outcome of the stage, while he could have raced it to show the world what he has in the legs. It’s great to see that in a tt, but better in a race.

Apparently they did a really hard ascend of Platzerwesel today, the calculations say 6,83 w/kg for 20 min by Gall. That's actually so hard it makes more sense to me now why Vingegaard was so passive.

I already thought, during the race, they were just happy to cross the summit and didn’t bother anymore with trying to attack, and just try it in the sprint, because they had enough of it.

I also saw this stage had quite a low average speed (37.9) and more than 3500 vertical meters, which is quite a lot for such a short stage (if you bother to read the whole topic, you will find me getting dragged into discussing how hard this stage is ;-)

Just watching the stage I was fully intertained, and maybe I should just stick to that part :)

/peace out.

I’m right with you on this one. Hopefully it’s just because people are very engaged;)

I think the last Tours have been fun to watch and particularly interesting when it comes down to which strategy the favourite teams have followed.
Pogacar followed the short attacks and bonus seconds optimisation and Jumbo did everything they could to make the race hard almost every day ~ on top of that they had a clear focus on a couple of stages where they expected Vingegaard could really hurt his opponent. They succeeded even though their tactics seemed hopeless according to most of the forum in the first weeks.

Pogacar got a very deserved stage win today and have reason to be optimistic for next year. I hope he/they will come back even better prepared next year and make it more tight all the way through. He is a fantastic rider and fun to watch, but seems to have a few little problems when I gets long, warm and really High.

Fantastic race this year ~ I remember times where they was a lot more boring to watch.

Watching this years tour, does any one els get the feeling, that Marc Madiot is *** at his job?
Was it last year or the year before that FDJ fumbled a stage win / sprint setup really, really bad ? Or older ?

That's maybe uncharitable on my part but FDJ always felt a little underwhelming on the Tour for... as far back as I remember.
Points for longevity, however.

I would of course have loved for Pinot to win, but it was great to see Pogacar come back and finish on a high.
Also significantly less heartbreaking because Pinot got caught as far out as he did.
It was the best of all outcomes for everyone, wasn't it? Pretty much all good for everyone: Pinot, Gall, the Twins, Pogi, Vingo....the entire top 40 of finishers were all players in this Tour and in this stage except for the unfortunate crashers, like (HERO) Kuss. IMO it was a rare GT that had justice for many riders and some promise for future editions.

I always get the feeling they want to do many things and thereby fails to do anything proper.
