There is nothing smart about riding 50k in a 3 man-attack 20 seconds in front of a group that contains severals pairs of other teams who have extra incentive (KoM, GC) to keep the break distanced from the peloton. Everything he did on the Soudet was a waste on energy.

Off topic, but I highly recommend listening to Cadel Evans on the podcast Never Strays Far. He joins Ned Boulting, David Millar, and Peter Kennaugh as they travel to the next stop in a car. Cadel has great stories about the Tour and about his life (he was born in an Aboriginal community in Australia but he is not of Aboriginal descent).

I think we just saw what happened on the climb: Van Aert pushing together with Campenaerts 100m in front of a group of 25 fellow escapees. Where some had another incentive to keep the pace, namely the GC.
