Same here, but I guess it's better than getting dropped and finishing OTL and being sent home.

I dont think the time limits would have been that big a problem for them, they had a system and method that worked at the Giro as long as they stayed fit and healthy I think he would have made Paris.

but lets say it did happen that way, thats still leaving on his terms, and like in 2018, when it seemed like that could be his last tour, when he could have stepped off the bike got in the team car as they knew early on he wasnt going to make it, but he still rode the whole stage & finished in the dark long after most had left because he always believed you never quit on yourself, the outcome may not be what you want, but you gave it all you could.

getting caught up in a concertina roll in the peloton, and breaking his right shoulder again, thats not something you can really say is better imo

Regarding cavendish... regardless of his unfortunate exit, i actually think sharing the record with Merckx might be more mythical than beating Merckx's record, from Cav's perspective. He will always be mentioned in the same breath with Merckx. This is not the case for plenty of other riders who hold a record over Merckx.
