If you make it illegal for Démare to launch in the lane his lead-out rider set up for him as soon as a rider from behind moves in that direction, you incentivise more riders to launch their sprint from far back along the barriers where you will have a crash if one of the sprinters ahead don't notice him.
His lead out was in 'lane 3', Démare then launches in 'lane 2' and immediately switches to 'lane 1' to block Van Aert. He noticed him plenty. If the Area lead-out launches more towards the barrier, Van Aert would never pick the barrier lane as he'd know that Démare would launch there.

I think it might have been Rickaert who crashed in the beginning of the stage and that Kragh dropped back to help him after he was done at the front of the peloton.

Yes Rickaert was because of the crash earlier but SK Andersen wasn't feeling 100% so they decided to sacrifice him early at the front of the peloton. But because of him emptying himself early he also dropped early... so it wasn't necessarily that he dropped back to help Rickaert.

Looking at the heli shot posted above, I'm not actually sure he was aware of him.

A pity the crash for Roglic, but luck plays an important role in this sport-

I ve following during all his career people as Rigo or Landa, and without crashes in bad moments they would have won a lot more.

Now Landa has his oportunity to make a good tour, if doent matter if he finish 5 or 10, but this tiem top ten has a big merit...Other Tour 10 th was at half an hour with the absence of a lot of big names at the end of the races for crashed or other issues

That's all fine and dandy, but as he was the front sprinter at that particular moment, there wasn't even a 'lane'. There was nothing in front of him besides tarmac, yet he chose to swerve.
His leadout dropped out to the left to make room for him to sprint and he chose to swerve to the right. That was completely unnecessary.

Unless he might have felt there was another strong sprinter behind him on that side of course..

Pogačar has had one light crash at each of his last four GTs iirc and he‘s crashed at Liège last year for example.

You are dreaming if you think he could have beaten Merlier, Milan or Kooij if they are in position.

He has beaten an in position Philipsen this tour... who off this year is toughly even to Merlier and Milan and probably better than Kooij still.

This season

Philipsen vs Kooij: 3-0
Philipsen vs Merlier: 4-4
Philipsen vs Milan: 2-2

Now we can speak about if "everyone were in best position"... but that is just a max watts per kilo for a 10 second burst or so... and sprinting is a lot more than that!

No-one thinks Pedersen is as fast as the top guys...

but he has, and can, beat even a close to top form Philipsen depending on the race situation, parcours before the sprint etc.

And Bini is faster than Pedersen with similar abilities in terms of being able to get over bumps better without the fatigue of other sprinters.

In turn? He probably would have been in with a half-chance on stage 4, 9 and stage 11 specifically.

Rodriguez is the big surprise for me. Fantastic bike handler.
