Van Aert has to let the wins come to him rather than chase them so desperately. Do what Laporte did in the final today, go with moves. Don't put your team on the front so all the pressure is on you to deliver.

I was pretty sure he wasn't going to win today. He just wants it too much.

On the other hand, if Laporte hadn't been in that move, maybe he could've delivered Van Aert perfectly.

Smart and strong move from Jasper to jump out when he did. Wout on the front too early, Girmay boxed in.

I am not defending Van Gils, but it did seem like the Arkea rider drafted to his left instead of keeping his line.

there was a crash behind him which is always why GC guys sometimes stay up front in situations like this
Fighting for position in 10th-15th wheel is far more dangerous than hanging back like Vingegaard did. With the current rule-set, there are no time splits to worry about, only staying on your wheels.

It looked like it was clear until the Arkea guy sat up and pulled off to the left and closed the gap
Yeah, wouldn't be so harsh on Van Gils as many others here. Looked quite bad, but I'd say it's a bit of a racing incident. He might have had time to slow down when he saw the gap closing, not quite sure. But then again, any rider towards the pointy end of a bunch sprint will take some risks in the heat of the moment.

Ideally, when Laporte couldn't keep going until 200 m to go, he should rather have slowed down after the bends where he was free-wheeling.

Maybe, although this was more a matter of the guy in front of him moving away too early. Laporte had to start from too far out.

And still I felt Laporte was closer to the stage win today than Van Aert, however strange that may seem. He's a way smarter rider.
