I don’t know why for the Pau finishes they don’t occassionally use the short steep climb up from the river up to the Cathedral/chateau just for some variety. Though It’s not long enough to make a big difference.

That was a different hill (far steeper than the one to the castle). Would still be on the narrow side outside a TT, though - unless they wanted to use the (pretty good) hills directly south of Pau for once.

I'm a fan, but this is getting ridiculous...instead of just sprinting and letting them try to overtake him, he let Philipsen (like he did Mathieu in the '23 CX WC...and others) overtake, and then tried to come around.

Getting 2nd is becoming his calling card. I wish it were different, but it isn't.

In all seriousness, it is due to the Olympics. Starting on 26 July, no way the Champs stage could have been reasonably held in Paris this year. Too bad as it's such an iconic stage but it'll be an interesting change of pace with that last day TT..

Don't think he had enough room, and he was protecting himself while being aggressive. Tough call IMO.

Yeah, and a split decision in the heat of the moment as well. Though I saw this as a little different than two sprinters going the same speed and at full power shouldering each to maintain position or keep from falling. There are always riders who’ve slowed and are drifting back through the peloton at that very point in a sprint finish and if they got shouldered like this there would be many more crashes, as they’re not bracing for contact.
This, IMO, was like a football play where the ball carrier is already a step out of bounds, is slowing up and and stands more upright, when a tackler comes in still at full playing speed and a lower crouch and blows up the runner in spectacular but illegal fashion.
So I guess the Lotto guy should just get be a15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty?

Doesn't look like that to me. It looks like he gave the guy a shoulder jab from behind and sent him hard to the tarmac.

If he doesn't put his shoulder Van Gils is over the barriers and we have a Jakobsen case. Insanity to blame this on Van Gils. Yes I'm biased but come one guys. He comes with way more speed sees a gap on the left, goes for it and Capiot just keeps going to the left while looking behind in this right side...
