I agree with this. I think Vingegaard is going to be really strong this year. There's a lot of recency bias because Pogi was so good last year, but people are ignoring two key things: 1) Jonas wasn't in top shape last year; and 2) he (and Visma) know how good Pogi was last year and so they know what they need to do to beat him. It's harder for Pogi, because he doesn't know how much better than last year JV can be. I just hope Pogi is preparing with a mind to how bad JV's preparation was last year (i.e. expecting him to be much, much stronger), rather than with a mind to his own superiority last year.

I agree - it's the great unknown - how good is Vingegaard.

And we can't even use Dauphine as a guide, because it's his first race after a very long break - and there are no big mountains the first 10 days of the Tour - so he is probably not at his peak there, and neither should Pogacar be.

stage 20 really should have been a 50-60km ITT

what in the world is the point of the current stage 20? Was Gouvenou drunk when designing it?
3 ITTs in the same Tour is too much IMO.

Also the terrain on stage 20 is not easy, it's hard enough that if someone still only needs seconds, rather than minutes, it can be done on that stage - especially that late in a hard GT

A Pogacar 40 seconds down before that one - he goes long range, for sure, same for Remco.

If not it's an excellent puncheur stage with a rapid succession of smaller climbs all day.

one of the TTs would be an MTT, and a very short one at that. That is more of an MTF

even a stage 20 ITT would still have a low amount of ITT km compared to a traditional tour

Who says that can't happen in a bunch sprint?

It's about the principle. Changing the final stage from an honorary parade around the Champs-Élysées to a deliberate attempt to create chaos with the narrow Montmartre climb deserves the outcome that would be the ultimate finality of their stage design: chaos and drama with the yellow jersey suffering disaster.

Or better still, a little bit of rain that throws everything up in the air (including the possibility the stage gets neutralized leaving fans 'disappointed') because traditionally whenever it rains on the Champs stage, GC times are cancelled. But here now with the added Montmartre climb put in there deliberately to create a GC day in the final km's of the Tour? Prudhomme would face a tough choice.

Bookies currently have Pog at 1/2 and Jonas at 13/5. I'd have them at 5/6 and 6/5. Maybe a bit more separation as I think the route hugely favours Pog.

But Jonas was incredible last year without ideal prep, and has been laser focused on this one goal while Pog has been going psycho all over the place.

Honestly, replacing a big bunch of the flat stages with hilly ones is a development this sport should have taken ages ago and I love we are actually seeing something in that direction. Only 5 nailed on bunch sprints is genuinely great.
I think you're pointing at stage 1, 3, 8, 9 and 17 as bunch sprints right?

Just as at this years Giro there are a lot of hilly stages indeed (2, 4, 6, 7, 11, 21?), imo a little bit too much of the same. Who is gonna be the Pedersen of the Tour?

The parcours looks pretty bad. First mountain in stage 10. Besides the time trial (Evenepoel/Ganna) the first 9 stages are bunch sprints, group sprints and 1 punch sprint. That can be pretty boring. At least the Giro had mountains in stage 7 but the first two weeks of the Giro were also bad.

Hopefully we get exiting sprints between Merlier, Milan, Girmay and Philipsen :).

Yes, those are the sprint stages. Wouldnt even be surprised if stage 17 wasn't, but then again, Paris isnt for pure sprinters, so they will probably be extra careful. Stage 2, 4, 6, 7 and 11 are very nice classics parcours for a wide variety of riders - ardennes, flemish classics, very durable sprinters, puncheurs which will also see some GC gaps here and there. Thats the great part about this route. And I really do like stage 10 which Im sure will see some great racing throughout the day - first day in the mountains after 9 days in the flatlands and just before the restday. And you can add decently long early ITT to the mix, and you actually have a pretty good race until they hit the real mountains on stage 12.

I guess my point is ASO deserves some real praise for how they have gone about designing an interesting parcours given the geography they had available until Pyrenees.

Does anyone know the area around Loudenvielle? Trying to work out where would be best to watch the TT in person. On Google Maps, it looks like there are a fair few stretches of the route where there won't be much space to spectate on the side of the road. I think we could get the ski lift up the altiport - not sure if that would be more exciting, or find somewhere further down the course.

I still don't understand the complaints.
Why stage 21 can't be competitive?

stage 20 is the crime. That is perfect for a long and flat ITT

But Gouvenou being Gouvenou gives us a nothing stage

Stage 20 not being a gc stage is annoying because it's a weekend but I actually prefer this over a TT for the sake of the overall race flow. I really prefer the last gc day to be a mountain stage rather than a TT and that's especially the case if the final TT comes straight after the final mountain stage which can lead to very passive racing.

He literally says why. Which comments do you disagree with?
