Zubeldia was such a strange rider, lol. I think he did drop Lance that day as well. Sastre was ahead with his baby's pacifier though
2003 was by far his highest level in general, and yes you are correct, he dropped Armstrong with a few km to go briefly. Zubeldia was one fire that Tour and actually finished just above his more talented teammate and mythical climber Mayo who never came close to that level either. Actually miles off every other time he did the Tour apart from that one stage to Tignes in 2007 that Rasmussen won.

Now you wonder if letting van Aert riding for his own chances is smart. He went all in yesterday and couldn't do any important work today.

A fresh van Aert could have been in the break and helping out on Soulor or thereafter.

It's the trade off you have to make, when you are not the richest team.

If WvA was to ride just as a dom, he could do that for significant more money elsewhere.

After already getting dropped , i'd be surprised if he ain't gonna be in trouble real quick at Hautacam.
But props to remco resilience so far. hope he continues to fight till the very end of the stage.

I'll join in and mention that I am too. As I inevitably do.

Tbh its a little embarrassing to hear it over and over.
Simmons is from Durango also, isn't he? I don't know why Bob Roll never fails to mention Kuss is from there but I haven't heard him say Quinn Simmons is from Durango, CO...

They did the right thing. Pogacar might be hurt.
Cycling is a sport that depends massively on how riders feel in that moment. Even if the plan looked good on paper (which it did), if two of your main domestiques (and second-in-command) feel bad in that moment then it's still a bad plan and naive to keep going ahead with it, instead of moving to Plan B/C.

Very true.

Zubeldia never really ever found his 2003 TdF climbing legs again. He was good but never elite.
Neither did Mayo (in a GT). The whole team might have been spooked by that post-2004-Dauphiné phone call.

The way this is going Armirail is going to get caught on the climb when it's only 1 or 2 people left like Kwiatkowski

No doubt Remco will be in limit loss territory on Hautacam but mentally he must feel a lot better now than he did an hour ago. In years gone by he might have dialled it in earlier today.

I'm hoping it was just a bad patch and that he's feeling better now; it's a long shot, I know We'll see soon enough, but good show of character nonetheless. I'm sure its hard not to feel like folding up the tent with that happening right away.

I still cannot believe that Mayo only won one stage in the TDF in his entire life. His Alpe d'Huez performance was mental in that year, but he had his fair share of demons

But your leader is probably good so right strategy IMHO.
