Oddly enough I had this thought way back when I started racing when you would have been laughed at for trying it. These days the deeper wheels are not too much heavier than the shallow wheels so it doesn't make as much sense to me. Specialized is even selling reverse mullet wheels but how much weight can 1cm save? 20g?

On a this years basis - yes. On a "podium the Tour only 2 years ago" basis - no. He got 12th in the Giro after all, 1 place in front of 50 year old Majka. And his level is not improved for the Tour either.
