Less than 20 seconds ahead of Affini and Armirail, even in the context of them being the best non-GC riders he would have been less than thrilled to hear that in the morning without further context. The 17 seconds to Evenepoel mainly tell me that Evenepoel was on the lower end of expectations, although the absence of Ganna leaves some room for interpretation.
You have to be kidding. The wind changed, they have been saying it for 2 hours now. Even Voigt on the motahbike noticed it half an hour before Evenepoel started.

was over before it even started... another shady era sadly. i'm not even missing to watch RR since more than 2 years ago.
When TDF race route was announced totally predictable that first @10 days were going to destroy many, too many.. Soler, Almeida, Politt, and Wellens, over and over have heat on high..Alpecin putting fuel on the fire staying on the front so UAE didn't have to.. Not for nothing, got stage wins, jerseys..
UAE couldn't have played it better so far..Pogacar with team support, time cushion on everyone..
@6-7 riders below Pogacar ..everyone has a chance.
Visma needs a plan B or C already..
And all the speculation about Roglic having bad luck totally debunked after video today.. Guy is not an elite bike handler!! Top ten riders pedaling deeper into the corners, waiting way way longer to set up for entry to corners and on the gas much sooner on exit..Roglic riding tentative for a few years, but especially last couple of months during TDF tune up races..
Wout is lost in the woods so far.. And big motor Jorgenson almost a no show today on pan flat course..
Remco winning but not roaring and not taking back big chunks of time.. He is great, his ride today was good.. Ganna is probably double furious watching from home!!

Pogacar will have a bad day...one day....maybe in he next year or two...or five, but hopefully in the next 2 weeks.

Would probably be good for the race, but the question is what a bad day for Pogi looks like relative to his opposition (who might not be on their best day as well, but could be of course). If it's not collaps you are asking for, one day with a 40 second loss on Vingo is not going to make any difference, even if it's 2 minutes I guess it would not be nearly enough.

The man of the day is Vauquelin. What a ride! Fantastic result.
He was a complete surprise in Mur de Huy (Fleche Wallone) where he got 2nd.
He had a very good Tour de Suisse as well and he's having a fantastic 1st week of the Tour de France.
He's only 24, but he's got the heart.
Big respect for him.

Remco won but I expected him to do just a little bit better. Lets see how his legs are in the mountains.
Pogacar had a great ITT.
Vingegaard with a stinker today, which was surprising.
João Almeida started too slow and picked up the pace to limit his losses, in typical Almeida fashion. He was 20th at T1 and finished 8th.
The same can be said about Jorgensen, he was 17th at T1 and 11th in the finish line.

What about Pablo Castrillo? How did he finish 10th in a Tour de France ITT? Fantastic ride. It's by far his best ITT yet.

Even if Pogacar wins this Tour by twenty minutes, there will always be naive cycling fans who will claim his competitors have a chance in the next big race.
This. I keep reading things like Remco will be closer in the mountains, Vingegaard is showing to be close to Tadej because he followed him in a 800m hill, please Teddy is on another level and without misfortunes, he will finish this Tour on Hautacam.

Giving up on Vingo is a mistake, I think. He was the only one who could follow Pogacar yesterday, and this gap is still not very large. Lots of racing to go before Paris.
True, but right now there is NOTHING about Pog which says he is in any way vulnerable, and unlike a few years ago there is no "one two Rog/Vingo punch" that can be thrown at him; the only guy he has to worry about is Jonas, no on else in this race matters for overall GC, not even close. Jonas (and Visma) just took a big time loss and morale beating, Pog's team is strong, the momentum is going only one way. Short of a crash for Pog Vingo will have to be truly amazing the last week and Pog's form will need to decline. Never over until it's over of course but this wasn't great for the overall battle at all.

At the weather station at Caen airport (very close to the route), the wind was 7 km/h at 14:00 and 14 km/h at 17:00. So not exactly a dramatic difference between when Affini was riding and when the GC riders were riding, and therefore not enough to matter by more than a handful of seconds on a route that starts and finishes in the same place.

He semi cracked yesterday, his legs stopped working 100% for final meters of steep part of climb but it was relative to his rivals, everyone on the limit.
It would definitely be good for the race, for the sport ,fan base if Pogacar cracks and some come from behind scenario plays out. UAE team tactics have all kinds of insurance built in..

I would think the bigger difference is that the GC guys had a hard race day yesterday while the TT specialists sorta did one effort to position a team leader and then rolled it home.
