Looks like a touch of wheels in the middle of the bunch and Wiggans and Chavanel were held up. Three Sky riders are pacing Wiggins and the rest of the riders held up back to the peloton.

When the riders at the back were delayed by this, Moncoutie cannoned into the back of Kern, taking out Garate, de Gendt, Charteau and a few others.

Yeah ive wondered that too. If, say, Europcar and Saur-Sosajun got three in the break each then they could really power along and Garmin may not want to commit to chasing them all day. Do these attempts happen but get nipped in the bud?

If more people go in a break they'll be pulled back, especially on a sprint stage. Why you don't see more than 5 until the mountains or rouleur stages where they have more of a chance.
