Everyone against Philipsen. Have you all seen what Cav did yesterday the whole last km? If that was Jasper we would never hear the end of it.

He has to choose a side around Mathieu, this happens all the time in close battle. It looks more offensive because someone is closer to the side. It was close though, but nothing to get relegated.
I hate Cavendish as much as anyone and he did nothing wrong yesterday.

I guess I’m just an a-hole but I didn’t think that was worth a relegation. It was tactical but not really dangerous, jostling for position is what sprinting is about. No worse than yesterday. Just get rid of spring stages and have them do 200m timed on a track.

He has never been finished by any means, sometimes it is greatly exaggerated when a sprinter has a bad streak but he has only had a slight decline (and worse team), he won in the 2022 Tour (7 victories that season) and last year he achieved 6 (and many podiums) but he could only be second in the Tour, he sacrificed power to climb better and arrive fresher at the finals, but this year they have admitted that mistake and he has returned to a more classic preparation to have his usual max power.
I think this is correct about sprinters and is likely exascerbated by the fact that since the 90s, we have been accustomed to most Grand Tours (and sometimes entire seasons) being dominated by a single top sprinter. I was in some debate yesterday about Cavendish; I was arguing that while Cavendish hasn't been the dominant force he was in say 2009, he has been there to mix it up in some sprints over the past couple of years and has managed to win a few (and was usually placing near or just above Groenewegan in those sprints). His pulling of a stage win (and maybe more) wasn't particularly surprising to me, but some people perceive that Cavendish has done nothing over the past couple of years to suggest that he was still capable of winning a Tour stage. I think Gaviria belongs in this category too, and it wouldn't be the strangest thing in the world if he pulled off a win in this Tour.

Though many people would point to Phillipsen, I actually don't think that we have one sprinter right now who is truly head and shoulders over the rest. Phillipsen, 26, probably is the best of his generation, so I think a lot of people feel like he (or maybe Jakobsen, 27) *should* be dominating the sprints. Historically dominant dudes in their 30s (almost 40 for Cavendish) being competitive in sprints and pulling off wins feels wrong to people, even though those guys have been present at the pointy end of races all along.

Wout is angry: https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/a-...r-philipsens-tour-de-france-sprint-deviation/

Speaking before the news of the commissaires verdict against Philipsen, Van Aert said he was glad to stay upright, but that he would be angry if Philipsen did not receive a penalty. He also said such manoeuvres were part of a worrying trend in racing.

"I'm especially glad that I stayed upright. But if there's no sanction, that would make me angry. They shouldn't throw him out of the Tour, but he should be declassified.

"Today you saw one crazy stunt after another in those last kilometers. If they don't punish that severely, everyone thinks that anything goes. It's an increasingly big problem."

Not worth a relagation ? He pushed Van Aert (almost alongside) in the barriers. Van Aert could only avoid a terrible crash (the same of Pedersen yesterday) by braking and giving away his chances of winning. Good decision. Finally.

Unforgiven mistake from the UAE squad leaving Pogačar alone during the echelons.

Nice sprint from Groenewegen and Girmay very fast again and looking good for green. I think that after today's scare Van Aert will think twice before trying to do a bunch sprint again in this Tour.

Or, Jasper Disaster will think twice about endangering other cyclists in the sprint.

Just having to say that if Philipsen would be as psychopathic or dark triad as people seems to assume he would also be immune to punishment. It won't teach him. The darker the less susceptible to punishment.

I wanted Philipsen to win, but when the actual sprint really took off, Mathieu was long gone already. Let's just call it like is: Jasper pushed Wout into the barriers. I don't like it, but it _is_ what actually happened.
Weird thing is, he didn't even need it. He's got the speed, he's got his train Mathieu.
Don't b*tch about it, just win the next sprint.

Congratulations to Dylan Groenewegen for winning the sprint.

A stage on where battle for position lasted through majority of the stage, some crosswinds action involved, on where dropping UAE bar Pogi ... Philipsen was relegated rightfully, that is if the rider being pushed in the barriers doesn't back off, crash will likely be the outcome. As van Aert gave up his chances to win the stage, to prevent the crash, rider pushing should not be rewarded for it. Avoiding the crash and relegation after the race is the right approach. Cavendish angry at camera, for exposing him drafting.
