I don’t follow the British domestic scene very close (Actually I don’t follow it at all), so I am completely unaware of the up-and coming youngsters performing there at the moment.

One guy I however have had the chance to see a little (Albeit only on video-footage) is Joshua Thomas Edmondson and may I add he looks like a massive talent! I think GB has a mighty fine climber coming through their ranks in that young chap.

Anyway back to l’Avenir.

I still think Jordi Simon will be the man to beat in this race. I know he has been training well in the mountains in Andorra (Collada de la Gallina – Port d’Envalira) these past few weeks and it seems like the climbing-legs are coming around nicely.

He is a great climber. Solid time-trailist. Relatively fast. Good decender. Excellent puncheur. The closest thing to a "new" Samuel Sanchez riding around at the moment.

I don't think Jordi Simon can come close to Quintana. Remember this last year?
(only mtf)

1. [COL] QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander CEP 5h44'31" 8
2. [USA] TALANSKY Andrew - 39" 4
3. [ESP] LANDA MEANA Mikel ORB 39" 2
4. [COL] ATAPUMA HURTADO John Darwin CEP 41" 0
5. [NED] SLAGTER Tom Jelte RB3 43" 0
6. [AUS] MATTHEWS Michael JAS 01'34" 0
7. [NED] KELDERMAN Wilco RB3 01'38" 0
8. [ESP] FERNANDEZ SUAREZ Higinio CJR 01'38" 0
9. [COL] PANTANO GOMEZ Jarlinson CEP 01'38" 0
10. [RUS] IGNATIEV Dimitry TIK 01'38" 0

If you realise how well Mikel Landa and Talansky have been doing in their first WT-year, and see how much they lost on Quintana on a relatively easy climb, I don't see how Simon wil fare better

in what race against what competition did you see him?

simon is indeed a good talent but he's quite bad at itt imo. he did very well at murcia pro race which tells me he has potential. because usually spanish elite level cycling is pretty low nowadays

this is even more telling, the mountain itt teh day after. of a completelyt different evel. also this year quintana in the races in europe tore down fields as in castilla y leon queenstage in the steepclimb. he won kom in volta catalinya, a pro tour race, while had 4 racing days in his legs. also he is feeling better than last year. in the saleve stage no one can defeat him. best european is lucky to finish within 2 minutes, but in final stages are technical, explosive and hilly they can hurt quintana I think.

Took these from another forum. So all credits to the user who discovered the videos. Nothing to flashy. Just a small piece on FR3.

McCarthy lost time along with Lang. Jason was supposed to be our best climbing hope. Any idea why???

True but Jason is good as well. The fact that other teams can allow the 2nd placed rider into a winning break suggests they are not good enough or tactically astute to haul them back. And Australai have a strong team. GB should have been working harder to set it up for Rowe as i doubt they can win any mountain stages???

I think GB had a rider in the break for 120km but he got dropped. By then it was probably too late to start any chase.

The winning 7 man break only escaped 15 k from the finish.

gb's team is too weak to control the race, even in flat. australia is the one to do it but they had dennis in final break

True but ....

Australia put McCarthy and Lane on the front all day to protect the leaders jersey. After doing the work on the front of the peloton, they both blew having delivered their leaders close enough to the finish. When the successful break went, it contained enough members of the strong teams that the teams not represented were not strong enough to pull it back, so a break with the second placed GC rider managed to stick. They obviously made the call that protecting the jersey was their best play - whilst possibly blowing up their climbers for later in the race (possibly the DS felt the Australian climbers weren't good enough compared to the competition to give up the leaders jersey in order to protect their prospects later in the race - bird in the hand and all).

I think you'll find it was Richard Lang who rode on the front all day not Pat Lane, Lang is a sprinter, no way they would bust Lane like that

Sorry, yes, got my Lang and Lane mixed up. Was (incorrectly) recalling from a tweet I read earlier today from Dennis.
