Moedige Danny van Poppel maakt deel uit van vlucht va de dag, maar krijgt het lastig in de finale.

De Nederlandse ploeg heeft ook op de tweede dag van de Tour de l'Avenir een vooraanstaande rol kunnen spelen. Danny van Poppel (foto) maakte deel uit van de belangrijkste aanval, maar hij hield als enige geen stand tot de finish. De Zwitser Silvan Dillier won de sprint van de resterende vier en hij nam de leiderstrui over van de Australiër McCarthy. Wouter Wippert won op 58 seconden de sprint van het peloton, dat nog maar uit 56 renners bestond. Moreno Hofland werd 14e. Ook Ruben Zepuntke en Daan Olivier maakten deel uit van die eerste grote groep.
Danny van Poppel eindigde op de laatste plaats. Hij betaalde in de finale van de vooral in het tweede deel zware etappe de tol voor de eerder geleverde inspanningen. De sprinter van het Rabo Continental Team, die zondagavond een keurige proloog had afgewerkt, kon de andere vier vluchters op veertig kilometer van de meet niet meer volgen. Daarna moest hij ook het aanstormende peloton laten gaan."

Yeah weird, apparently he just wasn't good enough, which one wouldn't expect looking at his other performances this year.......

Don't think that Sweden and Netherlands will let them succeed again, Wippert and Ahlstrand want their stage win.

By the way, Daan Olivier named his favorites for the race:

Barguil. Il marchait fort au Tour Alsace. Le Colombien Chamarro, qui a été deuxième meilleur jeune au Tour de l'Ain. Les six Italiens sont forts. Je pense au Belge Wellens. On a vu les Suisses gagner le premier jour..."

Vegard Breen and Jungels are certainly a strong combo. They held off a charging peloton in Picardie as well, although that time they didn't have a wheelsucking Austrian with them

Too bad for Breen, he would really have needed a victory here in order to potentially get a pro contract.
