I don't think evenepoel will ever win on a finish like this unless he attacks at least a couple kms out. He physically couldn't have done what carapaz did here even in top peak form.

That was quite different. It was at the end of a climb, and there were only 12 guys left. Here you still had the big engines leading out and the pace was too high for Evenepoel to jump.

Carapaz really has this 300-400 m uphill long sprint, he already did this couple of times, but I must say that in my opinion Rui Costa lost this stage for Ulissi. He hesitated 5-6 secs and that was more than enough for Carapaz...

Tend to agree. Super effort and timing from Carapaz but Ulissi missed an opportunity there.

Maybe DQS wanted to contain the race more than set it up for Remco--stage might not have been best suited for him, or maybe he wasn't feeling too strong today, for whatever reason. Maybe aiming more for tomorrow's GC showdown. Just speculation. . . . Maybe it was a bluff, of sorts--pretending to show dominance up front but not willing to put in super effort for what would probably be small gap at finish (too many strong riders left at the end).

The second to last man in the UAE train was getting slower, then Costa didn't react on time.
