I already asked in the clinic but I'll ask here as well.
How come Pogacar looks so exhausted in a 149 km stage and looks much better at the finish of Monuments?

My guess is a lot of it has to do with when he is interviewed. Also here he had to push untill the end because Lipowitz was pretty strong, at least that's what he said in the interview. Called it not easy at all.

Pocagar has been riding up and down the Poggio, cobbled bergs and pave sections for the last 6 months, his body is attuned for repeated anerobic efforts rather than 25 minute climbs. He has 8 weeks to transition, the older you get the harder it becomes, it's possible but a tight turnaround, an interruption in his training could completely screw him for example.

So Nordhagen and Martinez talked it over and decided to wait for the group rather than being alone the two of them in no mans land. It keeps the others closer on GC but based on the climbs they seem to be stronger than all the rest anyway so they should keep the other behind them on tomorrows stage.

And things famously go very wrong for him all the time.

He put 1'30 into the entire chasing pack today. Him winning without Pogacar seems utterly beyond belief indeed.
Without Pogacar, the dynamics of the race this week are completely different. He has lost major stage races against Jorgensen, Almeida, and CRod in the past. Having dominant riders in the race helps him to achieve better results.

definitely the feel of a chaser rather than someone who can impose - top 4 in the Tour looks likely
I think you nailed it. Being able to follow, doesn't mean that if Pogacar wasn't there he would have been able to go solo on the attack.
Similarly Pidcock wouln't have won if Pogacar wasn't in the MSR, because on his own he would not have had the strength to make the selection Pogacar did.

He is only running Romandie to tick this race off his box.

He should not be competing there if we consider his weight and preparation.
I disagree, I think actually testing these efforts at race level before the training break is important will be helpful. He probably knows a lot more now about what he needs to do in May than a week ago

I think that's unfair, he's come a long way in the past 12 months and he hasn't been in a race with just that lot since. Besides, Almeida in a one week race is probably as good as it gets outside Vingegaard/Pogacar/Seixas, and a realistic place for him to be.

At the end of the day, Lipowitz can produce more watts more consistently than almost all his non-alien competitors. I don't see how he wouldn't be able to drop them at least once in the course of a one week or three week stage race. Fwiw, ai do think Bora should send him to a race without the aliens to get him in the position of favourite and controlling the race, and see if he can convert.

Once again Lipo proves he's the real deal in Bora when it comes to GTs and shorter Tours.
Great comparison with Basso, even tho Basso was better overall.
Remove from the equation the duo Pogi/Vingo and Bora has probably the two best Tour contenders in Lipo and Giulio.
