Daniel Diaz really doesnt thrive under strict European cycling rules. jens_attacks must be disappointed.

To be fair, he crashed quite hard in a prep race just before San Luis ;)

Great stage by Villalobos. Costa Rican cycling is really blooming at the moment. Guys like Villalobos and Joseph Chavarría hopefully will get to run in Europe.

Great performance by Sepulveda! It's not that strange he's won this by 2 minutes: the group of Colombians didn't do anything to chase him back, and Sepul is always in great shape in his home race.

Great rides by Acevedo and Villalobos too! But i'm surprised by the young kid Maldonado. Only 21 years of age and already climbing with the best!

And 9th place for Millan. Super mutant Jonathan Millan :)

I think that might be the first race that his team have ever won that isn't a small French race, except for some stages of the Tropicale Amissa Bongo.

He also said that he suffered yesterday and that he didn't have the legs. Let's see if he's able to do something in a few european races.

It might not be strange that he won, like the Australians being super strong for the TDU, but it is certainly pretty crazy that he absolutely murdered everyone.

It's remarkable indeed, but not stranger then the big Dani Díaz show.

I thought Nibali said he was going for the win here? That would suggest he was in good form--or at least he thought he was in good form. I wonder what happened out there that he didn't finish with the favorites.

He already said before todays stage that he wouldn't try to dig deep, it was more of a training ride for him.
Ok, it's just San Luis, but it's still a bad sign.

Ok fair enough. I've not been keeping up with his statements and I was referencing a CN article I read the other day.

What happened is that Nibali is in his usual mediocre early season form.

Sorry for the nationalistic bias but I have to say I find it really funny how André Cardoso usually beats all the over hyped american riders in his team. Just another day in the office! And to think he probably won't even be considered to ride the Tour regardless of what he shows in the early season :(

12 CARDOSO André Cannondale Pro Cycling Team 2:14
22 TALANSKY Andrew Cannondale Pro Cycling Team 3:45
68 CRADDOCK Lawson Cannondale Pro Cycling Team 10:58
69 BROWN Nathan Cannondale Pro Cycling Team ,,
85 HOWES Alex Cannondale Pro Cycling Team 16:14

Cardoso will be considered for the Tour team and if he isn't in it he will ride the Giro. He's the best climbing career domestique they have, and he has a contract for life there. He's absolutely reliable. There's a difference between the attention a rider gets from the media and the value a team puts on him. Remember, they renewed his contract over Acevedo, even though Acevedo on his day can do things like come second at this race. Acevedo is flakey, Cardoso isn't.

He may be in the Giro team instead though, because they seem to have promised Uran the kind of support a contender for the win should have. That probably means Dombrowski and Formolo, who obviously have better potential than Cardoso but probably aren't as reliable so they may want him there as the guy who will definitely be decent day after day. Alternatively, as they won't want Formolo or Dombrowski doing two GTs in a row, they may actually need Cardoso for the Tour. After all, both Rolland and Talansky are supposed to be protected and someone who can climb has to do the protecting. Once you remove Uran, Rolland, Talansky, Dombrowski and Formolo from the discussion, there aren't that many strong climbers on the squad.

Cardoso has finished between 15th and 25th on GC in his last six Grand Tours, while always working for someone else. That's exactly the kind of metronomic reliability any team wants in a climbing domestique. Never really threatens to win anything, but is always good.

I don't think it's nationalistic to get irritated with him being overlooked though. He's one of the great unsung, never gets mentioned, never gets talked up, never gets called a super dom, career domestiques. I always admire those guys.

You know the fun thing in the next mountain stage is to see if Nairo will kill himself for his brother so that he can win this race.

I hate him at first when he won the KOM jersey at the Volta a Portugal by taking a lot of 3rd category climbs along the race while Eladio Jimenez won in both Sra. da Graça and Serra da Estrela that year. I thought it was really lame :p The he turned into the best climber in Portugal while being a domestique for David Blanco.

I actually think that the Giro-Vuelta suits him perfectly as he's not a 1-week stage racer so 2 GT's is perfect for him. It's just that he deserves the chance to ride the Tour ahead of most of the hyped riders of the team.

I think he kills his brother before he kills himself so he's safe on that account :D

Fercase in '07, awesome, he was in a whole bunch of breaks that year, great stuff. Jiménez and Tondó battling, while Héctor Guerra dragged fat Cândido's worthless backside up every mountain in sight to pick up 85kg mountaintop bonuses. I remember being so annoyed at the 2011 Volta when I thought it should have been his turn to shine but because of the long and hard Guarda ITT he ended up domestiquing for Ricardo Mestre on Torre.

"I did a good race - said Miguel Angel Lopez after the fourth stage of the Tour de San Luis - and I must thank the team for allowing me to take the final climb in the top positions".

"I chose to stay with the favorites to win - said the young Colombian - and not to make too much effort to resume the first. Saturday I will give my best and try to win the general classification".

Silly ass strategy to win the overall ...if I believed him.

I only saw the final K, but I'm guessing he tried to drop Nairo Quintana and them before, but couldn't. Sepulveda has it in the bag anyway.

Koshevoy apparently finished 5th with nobody noticing,
Seems like an absolute beast of a rider,- like Kiryienka- that was a very good ride by him in his first Vuelta last year. A big regret for me CQ wise.
