Impressive by Bakelants to still try and contest it after being in that break.

Gret sprint. A pity Sagan got himself boxed in.
He was too far back when the last attack went off, otherwise he was looking good. He came back from a long way back before he got boxed in and ran out of road.

He was right at the front and let the gap form behind Burghardt
He looked further back to me but I don't doubt what your saying after he closed down the previous attack himself and probably was either a little tired or irritated that the others were sitting on him to do the work.

Gilbert winning a 60-man sprint? This guy is on another level this year.

It wasn't a 60-man sprint. It was more like an 8-10 rider sprint with riders blocking the road for the real sprinters who had been too inattentive or cautious or whatever to have a real chance of sprinting.

Sadly, the field did not open up for Sagan like the ocean did to Moses again (cf. what happened at Eneco Tour last year) but it was his own fault for not getting in on the action when he should have done so - and the same goes for Matthews and Degenkolb, really.

When it's all said and done, who will have had a more impressive career, Gilbert or Valverde? I am thinking more would say Valverde. Sure, he had a ban, but he didn't have too many victories taken away, and yes, he is a two years older, but these guys have had quite impressive careers. That 2005 World Champs podium was one for the ages, eh? Boonen, Valverde, Gilbert....

With my profile picture I can't answer Gilbert to that question. To me, reliability is also a relevant factor, and Gilbert has been largely unreliable and irrelevant for the last four years to suddenly surge back into a rich vein of form. Valverde has been top class the whole way through (and his total points accumulation on rankings such as CQranking and Cyclingranking.com dwarfs that of all contemporary riders by a great margin).

Others who value big victories (and a variety of these) more will probably be more inclined to say Gilbert. But when Valverde has won the Tour this year, the discussion becomes moot :p

I am not a fan of neither, but that is not a comparison "at all". Not even close.

I agree. Phil all the way because everything about Piti belongs in the clinic section.

Not sure which is more appropriate  or

In any case, this tangent should probably be taken to the Valverde or Gilbert thread if it's going to be discussed for the millionth time.

I only count Piti's victories after 2012, so Gilbert wins

Well since you are so moraly just, then you shouldnt count Gilbert's victories in 2011 since Ibarguren was his doc that year, and now has reunited with him this year again!
