Well, Brice Feillu has made the break of the day and has two team-mates with him, but HTC is keeping them on a short leash for now.

Wide open looking GC - even more wide open looking stage. Saxo look strong though. I have a feeling it might be Fuglsang's day today while everyone is watching Frank Schleck. Not sure Frank will really want to get in a GC battle with the Tour just round the corner

Leipheimer could be well placed for the GC, maybe even Cancellara can limit his losses to a minute

Not very. Fast and furious. Very similar stage to 2006. The final climb is almost like two, seperate climbs.
I remember "Chicken " blowing up so badly, he got passed by Simon Gerrans, who almost hung on to the top to take the stage........
2006 La Punt TDF Stage 6:
1 Koldo Gil Perez (Spa) Saunier Duval-Prodir 5.49.52 (36.391 km/h)
2 Jorg Jaksche (Ger) Würth 0.36
3 Jan Ullrich (Ger) T-Mobile Team 0.40
4 Jose Gomez Marchante (Spa) Saunier Duval-Prodir 1.39
5 Simon Gerrans (Aus) AG2R Prevoyance 1.47
6 Frank Schleck (Lux) Team CSC 2.09
7 Janez Brajkovic (Slo) Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team
8 Giampaolo Caruso (Ita) Würth
9 Angel Vicioso Arcos (Spa) Würth

Rogues gallery?
How did gerrans finish so high?

Luis Leon Sanchez is the odd one out. The climb is too hard for him. I can see Gesink and Schleck finishing together, though. And Gesink dropping Schleck on the descent
Gesink and Schleck on a descent together? That would be carnage.:D

With two major climbs before the last I don't expect cancelllara to be able to limit his losses.

Good to see Frank racking up some more mountain points in the break. How much points will he get on the HC climb and the cat 1?

If Gesink attacks then surely he will just crash on the descent :p

(Yes, this post was in jest).
Hellooooo, Frank Schleck is in the race.

Even Gesink's rep as a bad descender is largely due to his loss of the Paris-Nice lead when a certain rider crashed right in front of him. This rider was... Frank Schleck.

Wout Poels awesome climbing talent :p

Kidding

Gesink and Schleck in a descent? That would be a match "who will fall first?"

Not looking good for Feillu, he got dropped on the first climb.

It was stupid for him to be the Vacansoleil going solo on Tuesday. I always thought he would've/should've targeted this stage. Now he's not got it for the stage that actually suits him.

CN Live Report referred to Oscar Pereiro as a Caisse d'Epargne rider with intentions of riding for himself come the Tour.

Did I miss this transfer, or is it completely false???

i was just going to say the same thing. He went in with both feet on that error. Oscar (still) rides for Astana.

Cyclingnews' Shane Stokes spoke to Oscar Pereiro at the start today. The Caisse d'Epargne rider was "happy with my form and with how things are going. Today's going to be a tough one and a good test of everyone's condition."

The 2006 Tour de France winner will be preparing for this year's July Grand Tour which - in the absence of team leader Alejandro Valverde - could hold some possibilities again for him.
Cyclingnews rubs it in. He could have had some possibilities without Valverde ;)

Coverage isn't due to start for an hour.

What is it with the TdS and starting stages in the afternoon?

It's some event going on somewhere else in the world... I'm not sure... I think it has something to do with kicking a ball.

I wonder what cyclists would make a good football team.

Goalkeeper: Dario Pieri - so fat, you can't pass him
Right back: Jens Voigt - he will keep going the entire match
Left back: Andre Greipel - fast, but not good enough to be a winger
Centre backs: Fabian Cancellara and Tom Boonen - strong sturdy men
Defensive midfielder: Cadel Evans - a real aggresive pitbull who might chew of Messi's head.
Left winger: Mark Cavendish - explosive and fast, maybe a bit selfish though
Right winger: Oscar Freire -more of a teamplayer than Cavendish
Attacking midfielder: Alberto Contador - the playmaker, the best player on the field
Support striker: Robert Gesink - can hold up a ball and set someone else up for the goal (just like in cycling...)
Striker: Alejandro Valverde - can do anything and scores loads of goals, doped or not.
