I was interested to see how much ground the Tour down under covers. I was thinking they maybe go from Adelaide to Melbourne or even Sydney.

THen i saw this

http://www.tourdownunder.com.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0009/29646/TDU11_MAP_overview_FINAL.pdf

is this true???

Does the entire tour for real not leave the suburbs of Adelaide?

Does a week long pt race really cover a smaller area than the Tour of Flanders?

Logistically, moving the TDU out of a city and its suburbs would be a nightmare here.

So for all the other stages its just highlights?

I'd have thought a WorldTour event would get bigger publicity than this...

That is the problem with a low budget TV network.

It's up to the race organisers, spend $2million on one cyclist or a few hundred k on coverage for the first four stages.

No Australian network would find it profitable, so it's up to the organiser (SA Government) to provide it.

No, its mostly in Adelaide Hills, north south and east of Adelaide outside the metro area.

The advantage of Adelaide is they stay all week in Adelaide Hilton and the starts are not far, some riders ride back to the hotel from the finish line.

Adelaide is a realtive small place with population 1.1m

The stages arnt overly long as its the first event of the season and no point being 200km+

Regards

Short report in advance of the stage:

Lance Armstrong sings autographs and is treated like a hero at the start of the stage. Various dignitaries try to get photos with the 'great man' at the start.

Stage starts...... Breakaway including a rider from UniSA and Euskatel........break caught 5km before the end of the stage.........Sprint finish...............Griepel wins.

The only potential variation is if someone else wins, not the way the race will pan out.

And that right there is why I wish the Tour of San Luis is shown live on the telly rather than TDU.

Well other than cricket and afl in Australia I guess not many sports would find showing an event profitable of that's the case. What other sports are there that would be profitable?

Any highlights?

ANd im not talking about geo restricted ones, or sky. Im thinking proper internet highlights which anyone in the world can view on their browser.

SBS's highlights are not geo restricted. Check the cycling central site.

Liggett said that the TDU was around the 4th best race in the world on Cycling central show this week. No joke!

Sports which don't need helicopters and motorbikes which aren't on in the middle of a weekday competing against the Australian Open!

It's not like the webmaster weighed him before publishing those numbers. He probably got them from Wikipedia or whatever.

don't be so stupid. it's not webmaster. these guys get weight and measured at beginning of season and then these are put on website. that's why they fluctuate sometimes  so according to website he is now 184 and 81 kg and last year he was 79kg
