Actually saw that on a Nivea add on the London tube once. Annoyed me to no end :)

The other one that gets me is in "SOS" by Rihanna (now there's somebody I can't stand), where I can't tell if she's singing, "why, oh, you are making this hard for me" or "Y O U R making this hard for me". The first is grammatically awkward, and the second is just depressing. What is my 'making this hard for me' doing? There's no indication! What about my 'making this hard for me'? What is a 'making this hard for me', and do I even have one?

Never listen to The Killers' Human then. Good song though.
(and I hate Rihanna and her freaking Umbrella too)

At least Cav's obscene gesture was technically correct.

The messageboards would have been awash with criticism and people saying how he actually should have done it.

That would have ****ed him off even more.

Cav has once again proven two things: He's really fast and he's a jerk. Woo-hoo. His behavior, past and present, toward the sport and his peers indicate to me that he's very insecure.

You people have no idea what a class system entails, so misappropriate the word to mean manners. If you insist on speaking our language, please do it properly.

Actually the person used it very well and it is crystal clear to American readers. Perhaps it is different in jolly old England but that is your issue.

Get over yourself you bloody boob.

I have to say I like Cav - he very is passionate about what he does.

Sure, Cav is mouthy and shows little class (sorry WLS :p) but we knew that about him. It is part of his character and I would prefer todays gesture than him saying he was 'relieved' to be back, yadayada..

One of the things I like to study in a sportsperson is how they behave when things are not going well. My admiration and respect for both Cav & Andy Schleck has risen this season as both battled back from their respective injuries. It is little over a month ago that both were getting shelled out the back in Tirreno-Adriatico and yet both stuck at it and have ridden some big races to get back in shape.

I expected him to win this week - but I will admit I was surprised he got dropped yesterday. He is still a little off top form - and he will be the first to know it - so I fully expect him to be very mouthy during the month of July.

Perhaps there is some indication that he does worry about Greipel, at least when Greipel's in serious form and he himself isn't. You'd never catch Óscar Freire saying stuff about Graeme Brown like that, but that's where it's relevant.

Not sure what this class nonsense is all about...

...but as for Cav, LEGEND is the only word that springs to mind. Obviously the so called cav 'haters' are loving it too by the amount of fuss being made. Bring on the TDF. And the worlds.

:);):);)

I don't know if I would go to legend...don't call me a hater..I like his sprinting ability, but don't like the man (boy). Infamous is possibly more appropriate...I mean the field he beat today...just OK.

Yeah, I totally agree, it is a pi** weak field - the win should generate no discussion at all, but it's cav, so it does.

Even the BBC (who vaguely know cycling exists) have covered the result, I guess purely because of the controversy caused by the victory salute. It's all good, cycling in the UK never existed as a sport (at least as far as the press was concerned). on that score, anything good (or bad) which comes from the direction of Cav is great.:)

It would appear that you lack class as well.

Ha. But seriously, you've never used the expression "He's a class player," "He's class"or "that's class?"

I find it difficult to believe given the frequency with which the British contractors I work with use those expressions. Perhaps if you're having a tough day, you should step away from the computer for a few and get some fresh air? It seems a little silly to state that 300 million people are ignorant of class systems.

...and in the event that you're still not satisfied, there might be more than one definition listed for class in the dictionary. Perhaps you interpreted that statement using the wrong one?

And Cav's not a legend. Cipo was a legend. I'm not saying Cav won't get there, but let's not get carried away quite yet.

Loved the celebration, by the way, even if it was without class. ;)

Anyhow, Cav's got a long way to go to beat our old favourite and his victory celebration.

Cost him $250 for this little show of emotion.

I think Kai Reus did that once in de Ronde van Noord-Holland. I also Think Traksel won that race while two fingers up his nose when he crossed the line (don't know if that translates:winning 'with two fingers up your nose' says you won easily without much effort).

Cav should do Noord-Holland next year. :D

Of course! That's what Cav's been doing in the off season! Practicing his Dutch expressions ;)

For the record : there's no pictures of Cav pointing his two fingers on the HTC-Columbia website.

Greipel webmaster ?

If I were head of HTC or Columbia I would be on the horn right now talking to team management and demanding that something be done. The UCI should sanction that punk for bringing the sport into disrepute. No sponser wants to have those kinds of pictures, with the company's name prominentaly displayed, broadcast around the world; and sponsors are the lifeblood of the sport.

Controversy also brings great publicity.

Cav is pure class. The journalists that criticize him are pure benders.

Yes, it is because of these actions that I will not buy something from HTC

Anyway, I do believe it is perhaps not that bad for the sponsor, it will however proof a problem for Cavendish himself in the future. I do not know how he is within the peleton, however if he is as smug and as annoying as he comes across, I do think it will become hard for him to move to another team, should he ever want to and it will also become more dificult for HTC to get other riders within the same team as Cav, especially if these sort of things remain normal for him.

In britain the two finger salute is a way to say f*** off to the french (and nowadays anyone else). It comes from the days of the english longbowmen. The french used to cut off the two fingers used to pull the bow string back before releasing them (if they had been captured first), so the two fingers was a way to tell a frenchmen from a distance that they could still kill them.

I like these tidbits of history & information. I'm not sure I like Cav's use of it and think it is a bit over the top.

C'mon kid, what kind of reaction do you expect from folks when you spout off about teammates, etc.

Many people like the brashness, but a lot of people also like to see sportmanship too.

When Cav was just cocky and brash with his wins I was great with it.

Last years TdF, for me, he pushed it over the top, for me, basically declaring that no one could beat him.

I would expect he will be difficult to beat and has certainly fueled anger in himself to fire him up. But I, for one, will be hoping another sprinter sneaks ahead and steals the win when he's busy with his "gesture of the moment" pose crossing the finish line.
