I'm sure Cav will say it was v for victory, but if you fold down the index finger, then yes, it is VERY rude. At first glance I thought he only had his middle finger up.

Depends which way his hand was facing. Palm facing away from body = victory. Palm facing to body = "**** off".

I don't even need to ask which way Cav's palm was facing...

In Britain, two raised fingers like that is an offensive gesture. He also gave the forearm jerk with the raised fingers on the end of it.

He claimed in the interview it was about commentators, commenters and even journalists who "know jack shit about cycling" who've been writing him off. Because, you know, nothing proves you're back and a serious challenger than making it over a flat stage against a sprint field everybody expects you to crush after being dropped miles out the day before.

He is very unusual, insomuch that as he gets older, he becomes more childish.
Then his verbals on air. At least he stop short of effing it on Swiss tv.

This reminded me of an old Touring Cars clip, where John Cleland was being blocked and almost forced into the wall by a driver he was attempting to pass. The camera switched to onboard his car just in time to see him stick his middle finger up and then give the two fingers gesture to the other driver, on daytime TV, which commentator Murray Walker covered as being signals for "You're first, and I'm second to you".

You don't need to fold down the index finger. I once had one of my scottish friends explain why she kept doing that weird two finger salute. In britain the two finger salute is a way to say f*** off to the french (and nowadays anyone else). It comes from the days of the english longbowmen. The french used to cut off the two fingers used to pull the bow string back before releasing them (if they had been captured first), so the two fingers was a way to tell a frenchmen from a distance that they could still kill them.
