The whole climb I was asking myself if Remco (and QS) was weak or stupid. Turns out it was the latter. If Van Wilder had nuked it earlier it should’ve been significant gaps.

I don't think he was that much stronger than everyone else. It looked they had a headwind too.

Indeed tactics were not pin point, and Remco seemed quite frustrated (could have saved himself the brake test maybe). Anyway tommorow has another hard climb, he could still try to win GC.
Also happy to see Gloag at the front. Showed a lot of pontential way back in 2020 U23 Giro, but I think his pro career has been so far hindered by illness/injuries

Every time you think remco has matured he seems to have another bizarre tantrum. Hopefully he has an explanation for that brake check

Missed a break check, where was it?

Nice win for him, and winning is always good, but…not giving me “might win the Worlds RR” vibes.

He even looked behind right before he did it. He knew they were there.

So nasty and zero reason to brake from him. It was just to be a *** and then looks back straight after he did it again.

Yeah pretty weird. Curious what he and the other rider might say about it.
Yes I'm interested in his explanation. When I first saw it, I thought maybe it's an accident, but on rewatch, I would never touch the breaks like that when racing up a climb, even if sitting up.

I was quite surprised that there was such little separation between everyone, then I realised the headwind they were racing into.

I don’t think he actually wanted to break check. Looked like he swerved to the left and wanted to break and so force someone else to the front.
Wanting to break to force someone else to the front is the definition of a break check

No, it itsn't, only if you're riding directly in front of them. If you swing to the side and then brake, the other rider does not need to brake to avoid riding into you (unless they follow your swerve which is a very likely thing to happen).

The real question is whether today Geraint Thomas' lap of honour to wave to the crowd continues, or given this is his last race and it finishes in his home town and he's 16 minutes down and won't be marked, whether he tries something on Caerphilly Mountain to try to finish his career in style.

It would be the most antithetical thing to the way Thomas has raced since his transition to a stage racer in the second half of his career, but it would also be a very poetic/romantic kind of conclusion to his career.

I doubt he can get to the front on a final climb in his shape.
