He looks over his shoulder immediately beforehand. Had he swung off the front in a manner such that he wouldn't have a rider on his wheel, he'd have seen the rider to his right.

Did he deliberately attempt to crash the other rider? Probably not. But he probably did try to scare the rider behind him off his wheel. It was a reckless manoeuvre, which he should have known endangered the rider behind him.

You don't brake like that when letting people roll through uphill. You just ease off.

He also looks behind before doing it.

Thank god he never did that with Roglic on his wheel
