The shortened 80KM route was plan B. The weather and road conditions on the west side of the lake was supposedly better.

I am not sure the internet experts here understand the dynamics of being in the mountains or the weather out west. Only fools and the ignorant try to predict the weather out there.

Sometimes **** happens. Its not like the whole race could have woken up on Sunday morning and drove to someplace better.

That's the Sierras until...June. They should plan something else next year. It was stormy all the way to Canada so it the conditions weren't isolated.

That's very true.

But we had been hearing about the risks to Sunday's stage since Friday. At that point much of the race infrastructure was still packed in trucks. That's not too late to close down a city centre for a crit or advise residents along an alternate route if there's a viable contingency.

Biggest mistake was trying to run the stage there in the first place. It's Russian roulette with the weather in any month of the year. I think they had a couple plan Bs but the weather torpedoed them all.

I doubt this negatively impacts the future of this race. This isn't like the idiots who run F1 showing up with the wrong tires at Indianapolis. AEG runs this and they will just keep moving the ball forward.

IIRC there was a big fuss in Italy last year because there was 3' of snow at one point on one of the scheduled routes. There was much talk of re-routing but I heard no talk of cancellation whatsoever. I suppose it's easier to re-route in Italy, where cycling is a national obsession, than it is to try to do this in California.

Doubt they will get the tour next year

Heard a rep from Northstar talk at the start of stage 2 and he said they hope to get the tour again in a couple of years, so next year sounds to be off.

Sad since Tahoe in May can be pretty and the roads would be challenging.
