The first real break has gotten established. It's got 10 riders today and they have claimed a 40-second lead on the peloton.

We've figured out nine of the riders and they are Martin Pedersen (Leopard Trek), Lars Boom (Rabobank Cycling Team), Rubens Bertogliati (Team Type 1-Sanofi Aventis), Will Routley (Team Spidertech Powered By C10), Ben Jacques-Maynes (Bissell Cycling), Jeremy Vennell (Bissell Cycling), Alastair Loutit (Jelly Belly p/b Kenda), Jesse Anthony (Kelly Benefit Strategies-OptumHealth) and James Stemper (Kenda/5-hour Energy Pro Cycling presented by Geargrinder) Thor Hushovd (Team Garmin-Cervelo)

...unless they invest a lot of money into making mountain tracks passable for the péloton the same way as RCS has done with places like Kronplatz, the Rifugio Gardeccia and Monte Crostis in recent years.
How true! If only several states converted some of the old mining and fire roads into tarmac, then we would have a bevy of awesome routes.

I'm not keen on giving out HC status on anything other than a crazy hard climb.

The Tour of Austria (Austria!!!) only gives out 2 HC categorisations - Kitzbüheler Horn and the Großglockner.
Kitzbüheler Horn is only 7.8km long, it is however an average of 12%! Hochtor, at 14.1km, 8.9% is what I would consider closer to a true HC (again, I use Col de la Madeleine as my benchmark).

Nice comparison there. Cant dispute your conclusion.;)

Every break so far has had a Jacques-Maynes in it, right?

Correct.

Either Ben or Andy Jacques-Maynes has been in the breakaway each day - now that's teamwork! Ben called his brother his "stunt double" yesterday.

The Shack Tracker is a fantastic site to watch online. Kudos to Amgen/Radioshack/whomever runs the show.

For ten minutes or so the amgen stream had actual sound from the race: You could hear the riders talking, shifting gears and the helicopter hovering above them... then all of a sudden it goes silent and Phil & Paul take over. WHY DO THEY DO THIS???

Versus just went to commercial, maybe they have commentary on the tracker when they're not on VS.

That climb look steep as hell. I'm impressed Sagan is still there.

But why can't the play the commentary along with the sound from the race? Shouldn't be too hard. The stream would be perfect if they could do this.

Versus back on, tracker just 10 seconds behind, not bad.
