Still even without a win he has been one of the best riders in the early season. I'm not sure how the CQ ranking works - but I assume he still got points for all his podiums and the overall 3rd in Qatar?

I assume by now it's a confidence thing ...

Bennati's CQ graph tells a tale:

In '07 he won two stages at the Tour, and two stages plus the points jersey at the Vuelta. I think it's safe to say he won't hit those heights again, especially with the young sprinting talent in the peloton right now.

He's had a lot of illness and injury issues since 07. Wouldn't put it past him getting back up there.

Also - it's February. Do you think he's really arsed about getting beaten in Qatar and Oman?? I doubt it.

Got to admit I'm a little surprised by Bos. Did not expect him to succeed on the road. Good for the Dutchmen, it's been a while since they have been getting sprint victories. Jeroen Blijlevens was the last one if I remember correctly. Let's see how he performs on the big occasions this year.

Another factor is that Bennati is in a new team with a completely new lead-out train which isn't 100% operational yet, as we saw a couple of times in Qatar. He was by himself way too soon a couple of times, and after Cancellara was gone Vigano and Weylandt couldn't keep the pace long enough

Err.. he won a couple of days ago. He has the speed coming from the track but 208 k is different though but he has proven he can ride on the road.

Most of his victories have been against fast riders. He got Cav last year and this, Chicci is quick also so he's definatley got it.

On that first stage Haussler won he really got a perfect leadout (what do you expect with Cancellara in your leadout train). He just seems to lack a little bit of speed. Like last year, basically.

Nah, Max van Heeswijk won a Vuelta stage in his US Postal period. And he racked up a lot of small wins too (I think even 7 or 8 that year).

And Stefan van Dijk is yearly one of our best winners, but he is stuck in little races because of an incident where he ran away on an unexpected doping control. No big team would risk signing him.

But yeah, no top sprinter like Blijlevens for years. Ofcourse occasionaly guys like Van Hummel, the pre-mentioned Van Dijk and others sometimes nick a win, but nothing big.
Bos is the great hope, but beyond that there's also some youth coming up now with sprinting capabiltiies, like Vermeltfoort

I do realise he won the first stage, not a moron... I am surprised because he won a second stage. Never was a believer of Bos on the road, also not after he beat Cav in the "Clásica de Almería" last year. These two victories do mean something.

Nice round-up. Van Dijk really made a fool out of himself that day . I even mentionned him in my thesis.

According to the Rabosport.nl report, Bos said it was a very chaotic sprint. No train could hold because of strong wind. Then at 700m he saw Graeme Brown pass, Bos jumped into the wheel and Brown kept going till 300m. Then other trains tried to pass. Brown blocked them and Bos started sprinting from there.
The whole time he felt someone was in his wheel, but couldn't pass, and it turned out that someone was Bennati.
So indeed, it seems Bennati lacks pure speed, his 2nd place is from trying to hold Bos' wheel.
