Surprised Barredo isnt selected for Rabo, he was so loyal to Gesink last year in the tour and could be a helpfull domestic in the mountains for Rabo + also can keep someone out of the wind on the flat.
It now turns out he has two broken ribs... that might have something to do with it ;)

Paul Martens loves riding for Rabobank, but they never chose him for the Tour, and didn´t do so this year.

He´ll be extremely ****ed.

Exactly what has he done this year to deserve a Tour selection?

Strange decision regarding Renshaw. Do they believe in his sprint whatsoever? Is there no proper domestique for flat/hilly terrain? Possibly, the Tour participation was one of the points in his contract..

Tjallingi, Wynants and Tankink are the helpers in the Tour selection. The other six guys are there for wins in each terrain.

But if "accidentally" a helper instead of a LL Sanchez for example should make a break that arrives at the finish, e.g. in the last week, Wynants isn´t better than Martens, but equally. Tankink and Tjallingi are worse than Martens.

Martens is as good as a helper as Tankink and Tjallingi are, and differently than these two, he can win a stage. (It´s more likely, at least)

It would´ve been a sign to honour Martens, who moved to Maastricht, speaks perfect Dutch, does everything for the team, adapted perfectly, is extremely professional, and is there when 1.5 mio EUR man Gesink fails to make the Top 10 in the Ardennes year after year.

Martens gets his 500.000 a year, no matter if he does the Tour or not, but it´s a shame that he´s never been allowed to ride the Tour in his years with Rabobank till now.

Gesink, Mollema, Kruswijk, LL Sanchez, Bos, all these are classy riders, and Rabobank has a great history. But they also seem to waste chances.

Yeah, I also think that was in his contract. I would rule him out completely for a stage win, it could save his season, but he has to show something, otherwise, his HTC years bonus is done, and he´s back to be considered the rider he was when with Credit Agricole.

Apples and oranges, really, but as domestiques I'd rate Tankink and Tjallingii above Martens, actually. And as a climber, Tankink is probably better than Martens as well.

Who would you choose to keep you out of trouble on a flat stage, Tjallingii or Martens? I know whom I'd choose. Martens isn't exactly the most fearless rider around.

Gesink makes more like 800.000 a year. At least, according to NuSport magazine.

But the few times he's done a GT (the Vuelta) he has failed to impress. Personally I don't think he recovers very well. And even for a domestique that's important. Speaking Dutch and being a nice guy isn't everything, of course.

500k? Omg, what did he win? I heard Andy and Frankie had ridden for 750.000 before they moved to Leopard-Trek. Basso earned 400 or 450 in his first season after suspension. And Paul Martens... Lol. :)

I can´t deny some things in your post, but for example, also Niermann has ridden the Tour every year since about 10 years. They knew they could trust in him, and so they could. He´s left out now.
Also with Tankink, they know one can rely on him, and he´s really a capitaine de route, but Tjallingi is the same type of rider as Tankink, so I think one could have been left out.

What´s sure is that the decision has been made, no matter what.

In the world Tour, it´s mostly like this, I suppose:

Team leaders for GTs: at least 1.000.000 EUR a year
Team leaders for classics: at least 500.000 - 1.000.000 a year
Top helpers: 100.000 - 500.000 EUR a year
Helpers: 50.000 - 100.000 a year
Neo pros: 30.000 - 50.000 a year

Sagan, e.g. will have had maybe 30.000 in 2010, 150.000 in 2011, 500.000 in 2012, but don´t know his contract he signed end 2009. Maybe income was constant due to that, but performance is considered, he became world class faster than anyone else in the younger history of cycling, so he should earn quite well.

Sorry for having left the thread topic for this post.

No Fuglsang? You got to be kidding me. He is twice the rider that Horner is at the moment. Perhaps Jakob should have had his tongue deep up in JB's good old chap, Mr Lance, as well... Seems to have worked for Chris..

Birdsong is preparing for the Vuelta. Actually, we can start estimating the Vuelta team... :) Galoppin deserved to start as a matter of principle the team needs some rejuvenation even if this is one neophyte.

RHRH19861986, I think, it's a little bit optimistic, though, certainly there are a lot of nuances such as palmares, a rider status, etc :)

Jakob is pretty much riding for a different team at the Vuelta - just like every other rider on that team. Can't see them being that motivated for anything at that point.

You can assume this, but like I said, magazine NuSport did an actual investigation into this, and Gesink apparently makes 800.000. I think Boom is around 500.000, I can't imagine Martens would earn the same.

Wow, I bet your team is even higher-paid than Katusha or Astana. :)

This coming from an RSNT fan?

If your best paid rider earns 800.000 euros a year, I don't think you're an especially big budget team.

RSNT is probably the first by payroll, but the riders are paid according to their achievements at least. A 500k Martens sounds like a slight surcharge. :) I may be wrong )
