Marco Villa (Italian head coach): "we had a 3:45 at Montichiari, which was the best we'd ever done, and we knew that if we did a 3:45 we'd qualify. We're happy with the result, but if I were to analyse it now 'in the heat of the moment' I'd say we didn't race in our usual style, Milan did a lap in 13.0s when we wanted it to be 13.5s, we slowed down to get back on schedule but then we slowed down too much. Normally we race differently, tomorrow, let's see."

More or less what it looked like to me, too. The qualifying TT is very different from the actual pursuit, so I have absolutely no idea what will happen tomorrow.

Disaster in the women's pursuit, someone in the velodrome forgot to ring the ball at the 3750m point, and then also forgot to ring it at 4000m . Canadians thought the 4250m lap was the final one, so got into formation, then the bell did ring, and so the Canadians did another lap to get them to 4500m. Everyone vaguely confused.

Time is taken after the actual 4000m, but realistically the Canadians left a few tenths out there. Luckily, they qualified, and they were never in the fight for the top four so it hasn't affected proceedings too much.

Rowsell is good on comms, I like her.

Italy good and with a new NR, but a nervous wait as everyone seems to be very fast.

The Italians go a second faster. The Germans haven't been crazy fast since Brennauer retired, the Brits don't have Archibald, and the US have Faulkner instead of the more experienced Jastrab, so I don't know what will happen yet.

Bad start for the Americans, but their pace is fast.

They ran out of steam by the end though.

NZ look by far the strongest, in all honesty. USA also good, Italy's final km poor and GB lost a good amount of time in the middle section.

The disparity in performance between NZ and Aus men and women is unusual, I feel normally in these track events you get the form across whole contingent.

Nothing is decided yet, and Germany and/or Australia could still end up in the bronze final.

For sure, but I think NZ looked really strong and don't see Italy beating them tomorrow.

Yeah, it looks like a safe final for them (knock on wood). The Italians might decide to substitute a rider, but that probably won't make them that much faster.

Potentially funny DQ for France in the team sprint (only funny because it's France in a French Olympics, I do feel very bad for the riders themselves).

Ah, no, good to see that for a home Olympics you're allowed to false start an infinite number of times

I can't believe the judges ignored the false start rules? That is absolutely insane, I would be protesting if I were Japan/potential bronze medal opponent.

'In each round of a standing start event, a team or a rider is only permitted two starts. A restart shall only be given in the result of a false start, or in the event of a recognised mishap as per article 3.2.021. A team or a rider which causes a further false start or suffer a further recognised mishap in the first round shall be relegated.'

3.2.021.
