Hasn't Riis done this in the past with young riders? Give them a 1 year contract to see how they perform and extend it if they are performing well? I want to say he did it recently with Manuele Boaro, though I could be wrong in my recollection.

Well yeah, to see how they perform and extend if they are performing well.

In Kumps case of course it's a no loss strategy with his points even if he ends up being a dud.

Why did Movistar sign Szmyd and Capechi? Isnt half their team basically of that level in the mountains (and thats being generous to Valverdes and Cobos recent climbing skills).

Kelme heritage/legacy. Running the show on climbs but not being a factor.

No Kelme heritage/legacy at Movistar. They're Banesto/Reynolds/Illes Balears/Caisse d'Epargne.

They have a lot of guys who can finish 6th-20th in big races without too many who can finish top 5. Signing these guys is either a big commitment to what they think they can get out of Valverde and Cobo (or Quintana?!) in the coming years, or throwing more mountain helpers at the wall to see if one sticks.

After all, with Pardilla, Javi Moreno, José Herrada, Arroyo, Kiryienka, Intxausti and now Capecchi there's an awful lot of good climbing help there (assuming of course that they're not going to lose a bunch of them, as these guys could be being brought in to replace others who are on their way out!); Costa is improving as a climber but should be looking at hilly classics and short stage races (mostly difficult ones but not HC mountains ones, so races such as País Vasco I expect) for the moment; Madrazo is improving as are Castroviejo and the younger Herrada. Quintana looks like he has almost limitless climbing potential and I can see why he was the one of the young Colombian prospects they had their hearts set on from the start.

Remember that most people returning from bans have been better on their second year back - Scarponi, Basso, Vino sort of (he didn't race much of 2009), Sella and so on - so maybe they're banking on Valverde being much better next year than he has been thus far this year.

Kump's also not a neo-pro now thanks to his year with Geox, but because that year wasn't a great success I can see why there might be reservations.

Stéphane Poulhies (Saur-Sojasun) just signed with Cofidis.

I'm a bit worried about Saur, they are losing their best riders and so far no replacements in sight.

I know Movistar was Banesto. I'm just kidding

Before they started losing all their riders they were looking like a contendor to become WT. Now, not so much... Cofidis on the other hand...

There was a rumour on here he would go to Sky i think.

Dombrowski to Liquigas sounds like a good idea- for Liquigas.

And another one leaves Saur-Sojasun: Cyril Bessy signed with Cofidis.

Cofidis seems to end contracts with Aleksejs Saramotins, Leonardo Duque, Damien Monier and Mickael Buffaz. They plan to change at least half their personnel.

Wow, what's going on at Saur? They're getting stripped to the bone these days. So far only one neo-pro signing for 2013 known, and already four of their best riders going to Cofidis.

Cofidis continue with their mission to sign as many Saur Sojasun riders as possible. Next up is Guillaume Levarlet - http://www.velo-club.net/article?sid=68371

As correctly guessed by me. Yay.

Saur ,I think, put out a press release that they will continue with people like Simon, Hivert, Engoulvent, Lemoine, Delaplace etc.

Trouble is, now I can't find it.

Wait, here it is

Saur does not continue, so that's maybe why.

Heulot and Sojasun do continue, however. A new sponsor to be announced in the next weeks.
