Expansion of the Basque rules to other would be independent/recently independent regions?

Given current Scottish discussions, they could try David Millar.

JTL is Cornish, isn't he?
No, they've simply ditched the Fundación Euskadi philosophy. Now they're just another team.

With the note that they won't acquire 'foreign' leaders (yet?). A French (non-Basque) and Italian rider are rumored to join too.

Mikkel Condé v2.0‏@mrconde

As @sergi_lopezegea reports, Mikel Nieve met with Riis about a contract. Everything was ready but Euskaltel countered with a better offer.

You snooze you lose Riis. Should have reduced it to contract ASAP.

Spartacus looks like he will stay at RSNT. Also he will miss the Worlds and rest of the season as he still have problems with the collarbone

From the news page:

Fabian Cancellara has put an end to his 2012 season. He will undergo further surgery on the collarbone he shattered in the spring, skip the World Championships and then start training again in October for the 2013 season.

The Swiss rider will continue to ride for his current team RadioShack-Nissan in the coming season, despite payment difficulties and rumours about the team's future existence. The team has announced signings for the coming year, indicating it will continue, and has made clear that it expects riders with existing contracts for the 2013 season to fulfil those contracts.

Smart guy this Mikel Nieve

So Navarro wasn't offered enough. Nieve as well.

Bjarne needs to get back into that routine where it's okay to use money again it seems.

On the other hand.. Navarro has done f'uck all to be considered a raise worthy (if that's the case, of course)

Or he doesn't have as much money as we think. Which is getting far more likely by now. Most decent names without contract have signed somewhere by now and Riis didn't get many.

He did say he already had signed conctract with a couple or more. And that was after Roche's arrival. But the market isn't that big and it's getting a bit difficult to put names on those riders he apparently has signed.

Nieve is the worst type of rider for being domestique, considering his capabilities. He can maintain power for a long time, but he isn't at all explosive, which is what you want in the first 3km of a final climb.

Kocjan has not signed for Euskaltel at this point, he's only on their list of possibilities. Source: Basque Cycling News blog.

Laurens ten Dam isn't explosive at all either. But he can also set a high pace at the bottom of a climb. Domestiques just have the benefit that they can blow themselves up.

He said it's either Euskaltel or one of French teams.

But that doesn't mean those other names will be any good. As you say, the market isn't that big and there aren't (m)any big fish left.
